Te Poutāiki supports the Ministry’s commitment to be an honourable Treaty partner through the provision of strategic and specific Te Ao Māori expertise. The division guides the Ministry in its engagement with Māori, in its expression of tikanga and kawa, in the development of policy and in the capability uplift of our people.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

This is a new position at the Ministry and plays an important role in Manatū Aorere’s continued uplift of Mātauranga Māori. You will provide advice across the Ministry enabling Tiriti consistent strategy and policy development across MFAT.
- Develop and deliver robust strategic Māori policy advice through leading or working on complex multi sector issues with significant sensitivity and risk; identify and recommend processes for resolving problems.
- Provide Māori policy leadership within the division on projects that advance the division’s objectives.
- Support the division’s leadership team in the development of MFAT’s strategic approach to meeting its Tiriti commitments and aspirations
- Supporting the development of Tiriti consistent strategy and policy across MFAT
- Lead development of MFAT’s policy advice on matters which significantly impact Māori
- Supporting the development of Tiriti consistent policy advice across the organisation
- Articulating indigenous perspectives, from an Aotearoa New Zealand point of view, for international documents and audiences
- Supporting the organisation to understand and respond to the connections between Māori and other indigenous peoples in foreign affairs and trade policy.

The salary range for this role is between $124,674 and $146,675 total remuneration, inclusive of our 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution.

We’d like to hear from you if you are an experienced professional with the following skills and experience:

- Previous experience in a range of foreign/trade/development policy roles involving Te Ao Māori thinking desirable

You will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave Te Ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.
