We have an opportunity in the Civil Law and Human Rights Team within the Ministry of Justice Policy Group for a Senior Policy Advisor.

**Mō te mahi / About the role**

The Civil Law and Human Rights Team_ _is responsible for a wide range of policy and legislation. It_ _has a unique role in protecting and upholding human rights, engaging with the UN on New Zealand's core international human rights treaties, and working with other agencies on the human rights impact of policy proposals. On the civil law side, our work covers issues such as property, trust and succession law.

A key part of the role for the first 18 months, would be to co-lead the Ministry of Justice's vetting function under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990. The Ministry of Justice vets all non-Justice Bills for consistency with the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act. We do this to support the Attorney-General with his responsibility to advise Parliament where a Bill appears inconsistent with the Act. New Zealand Bill of Rights Act vetting is a core constitutional safeguard.

We are looking for someone who has an interest in human rights and a keen eye for detail to work alongside our Office of Legal Counsel in providing Bill of Rights advice. A law degree is not required for this role but it could suit someone with a mix of legal and policy experience.

- **Relationship skills** - Strong skills in engaging diverse internal and external stakeholders, and incorporating their perspectives
- **Analytical skills** - Be able to** **think analytically and critically, find complex problems interesting, and have a knack for solving them
- **Communication skills** - Excellent written and oral communication skills - in particular, the ability to present complex issues in an accessible way, and ask questions to improve understanding
- **Te Ao Māori** - Experience in working with iwi and Māori organisations and designing, applying, and advising on te ao Māori and te Tiriti-based frameworks for policy.

Strong understanding of the machinery of government, and experience with the legislative process would be an advantage.

The appointing salary for a Senior Policy Advisor is between $110,776 - $143,388, based on skills and experience.
