Roading Engineer

Maybe it’s the award-winning parks that provide acres of greenspace right in the heart of town (or the life-style blocks just out of town)? Maybe it’s the commute, or should we say, lack of (no traffic lights here).

It’s like getting a double shot of coffee in the morning when you live here and when you work with Masterton District Council (MDC) to create and support the great space that is called Masterton. Here at MDC we are looking for another fantastic person to complement our Roading Services Team in the role of Roading Engineer - Cadet.

**About the role**You will undertake a variety of practical on the job training along with formal learning to develop both technical and professional skills.

Guided by experienced engineers, you will support them in their day-to-day duties within Council. There may also be opportunities to work for local engineering consultancy firms and construction crews as secondments.

As part of your cadet programme you will be involved in supporting engineers to deliver successful outcomes in the below areas. This list is not exhaustive.
- Investigate enquiries from the public concerning roading assets
- Involvement in the preparation of business cases and programmes for asset management plans and decision makers
- Preparation of tender documents and specifications for the construction of new assets
- Project management and providing quality surveillance alongside our contractors on projects
- Help design, build and monitor improvement projects to our roading networks

With your positive and approachable attitude, you will quickly build strong relationships as you work closely with local contractors, providers and community groups.

You will be required to enrol in the **NZ Diploma in Engineering (Civil) (TK1019) Level 6 **and complete your papers. Performance and remuneration reviews for this role are 6 monthly (separate from the normal Council set up) and will include as a criteria successful completion of your papers.

**The key skills we are looking for include**:

- A minimum of NCEA level, including at least 12 credits in maths
- Experience using computer software (including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook)
- Strong writing skills (including report writing), and attention to detail
- Interest in engineering (specially roading)
- Strong relationship management skills
- A full current and clean drivers licence
