Senior Customs Officers, Grade 1
Opua Maritime Team Opportunities
Leave the ordinary behind - join the team that travels Aotearoa to protect our coast.
New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa is looking for a person to join our maritime team based out of Opua, complementing our talented Auckland team as Senior Customs Officers Grade 1. We have 2 roles available. This maritime role puts you on the water and amongst Te Taitokerau communities, where you'll be an ambassador for Customs and border security. You'll visit meeting places, marae and other venues to help people and communities understand how to identify and report suspicious activities near our coast. Your work will help keep our communities safe from organised crime, drugs, terrorism and smuggling.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
When you're not in the community, you'll be at sea, assessing vessels for risk, investigating suspicious activity and undertaking targeted searches. During summer season you'll be working the busy Opua maritime hub, including attending cruise ships which enter there. The key activity for the Customs Maritime Unit is to respond to any risk to the New Zealand maritime border. This involves; patrol; surveillance; clearances and searching arriving and departing yachts, detecting offences, preparing prosecution files and supporting colleagues in Whangarei and other ports.
This is not a nine-to-five job. You'll be on the water for long periods and you'll work on a roster, which means weekend work and odd hours when required. We understand the importance of life outside of work.
We'll give you the training you need for the job, and much of this takes place in Auckland. During your first six months training, you'll be spending most of your time there, but we'll support you to return home on days off wherever possible. Once you're up and running, you'll spend most of your time in Northland, within an established community that will support you in your work. Still, Auckland will remain a regular destination for you - you'll be checking in with your Auckland teammates and keeping up on your professional skills.
The salary range for this role is $64,608,854 - $81,474 plus an annual allowance of $15,640 for working unpredictable hours. Mid-point or competent for the range is $74,223 plus the allowance.
Ko wai koe | About you
Passion, flexibility and 'sea legs' required We're looking for people with a passion for protecting the Northland community, and an understanding of this unique region and its environment.
**To be successful in this role you will need to**:
- Either hold, or have the ability to attain one of the following maritime certificates, Inshore Launch Master, Skipper Restricted Limits and Skipper Coastal Offshore
- Be experienced in establishing and maintaining relationships with others to achieve win-win outcomes
- Be able to build effective relationships with local iwi and obtain engagement from the public
- Have knowledge of the risks to the border, which Customs is responsible for managing, together with an understanding of the relevant legislative and regulatory processes and a commitment to maintaining compliance
- Be able to work flexible hours - to work up to 120 days away from home per year - and to work and travel at short notice, as well as be on call
- Pass an annual medical and fitness test and maintain a level of fitness and physical ability to enable you to undertake the full range of duties
- Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to a wide range of audiences
- Have sound computer skills including word processing and the ability to make effective use of computer systems
What's involved
**Medical and Fitness Testing**: On an annual basis, Customs Maritime Officers are required to pass a medical assessment and pass a fitness test to the following standard:
- Beep test to 5.1 standard and 10 press-ups
- 50-metre swim in overalls, tread water for 3 minutes.
Security Clearances
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Already having Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.
Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers' licence.
