**Te āheinga: The opportunity**
As our Technician - Biodiversity, you'll supervise students out in the field and collect plant and insect samples for laboratories. At Unitec, we have our very own herbarium, and you'll be working closely with your team to assist in this area. Also, you'll have the opportunity to work with and support our academic staff in their ecological research projects.
You will be responsible for looking after laboratory instruments and training people on how to use them, while upholding our Health and Safety guidelines here at Unitec. Also, you will be responsible for supporting field work, collecting plant and insect samples for laboratories, and participating in various research projects.
This is a 0.6 FTE role start date 15 July 2024. There is potential for this role to increase to fulltime in 2025/2026.

**He kōrero mōu: About you**
As a Lab Technician - Biodiversity, you will come with proven experience in field ecology and plant identification.
Necessary skills and experience:
- A degree in biodiversity management, field biology, botany or ecology with a strong knowledge of New Zealand plants and natural history.
- Strong communicator with impeccable time management skills.
- Flexible and adaptable to work within a set roster as your start and finish times may vary week to week.
- You must have a full clean New Zealand driver's licence and be able to drive a manual vehicle.
- You must have, or be willing to obtain, a first aid certificate.
- An understanding or desire to learn te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and the values and practices of kaupapa Māori
- Evidence of active engagement in building diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplaces/environments
Useful skills and experience:
- Knowledge of New Zealand wildlife and geology.
