ESR is a Crown Research Institute with 600+ staff with sites across New Zealand and is partnering with the University of Auckland (UoA) to deliver genomic analysis for enhanced surveillance of Streptococcus A (Strep A) to facilitate vaccine development.

Mō te tūnga | The role
ESR and the UoA are offering an exciting opportunity to work on an initiative combatting Strep A through a programme of work designed to facilitate the development of vaccines. This project will have strong national and international collaborations and deliver genomics analysis for Strep A, a significant global pathogen that is associated with high disease burden in Aotearoa, and for which there are no approved vaccines.
By working in a cross-disciplinary team this position will provide deep insight into Strep A in Aotearoa and lay the foundation for an enduring surveillance system. There will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues working on Strep A internationally including other vaccine consortia.
This is a full time, 3-year fixed term opportunity with extension to permanent upon successful completion, the job is based in Auckland and will primarily be working from the UoA Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences campus in Grafton and ESR's Mt Albert Science Centre.

Mōu | About you

**To be successful in this role you will have**:

- An appropriate postgraduate qualification, including research experience at a national or international level
- Extensive experience in bioinformatics and computational biology
- Experience in infectious disease genomics, preferentially including phylogenetics, modelling and/or vaccine assessment
- Competency in reading and analysing scientific publications; ability to prepare and present scientific information (written and oral) to a range of audiences.
- Familiar with computational architectures, preferentially with Unix operating systems.
- Ability to organise workload, work as a member of a wider team and collaborate
