The Nominating Committee for the Climate Change Commission (Nominating Committee) seeks nominations and expressions of interest for three new Board members for the Climate Change Commission (the Commission).
About the Commission
An independent Crown entity, the Commission was established to provide expert advice to the New Zealand Government on climate policy in relation to both emissions reduction and adapting to the effects of climate change in accordance with the Climate Change Response Act 2002 and the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The Commission's advice will help the Government set targets, monitor progress towards goals, prepare policies and plans to reduce emissions, adapt to climate change and increase climate resilience.
Positions under consideration
The Nominating Committee will give particular consideration to an appropriate balance of senior governance capabilities, business acumen, economic background and scientific expertise on the Commission Board.
- senior governance experience
- strong business and finance expertise and/or an economic background
- sound understanding of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS)
- experience across a range of sectors and/or industries, with a particular focus on the energy and forestry sectors. Other sectors of interest are transport and infrastructure, agriculture, public health, waste or industrial processing, and insurance.
- experience across climate change mitigation and adaptation; this may include expertise across the environmental, ecological, social, economic distributional impacts of climate change and the resource management system and/or climate change policy interventions such as emissions trading, land use and international climate policy and/or experience in the identification and management of risks from the impacts of climate change
- knowledge of broad public and regulatory policy direction,
- strong relationship skills with the ability to communicate and build relationships with local and international experts
- strong working knowledge of microeconomics including how markets work, the incentives to drive change across business, sectors and communities, competition within sectors and a general understanding of behavioural economics and science
- a sound understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori
- experience working in or with local and central government.
