The Academic Division at the University of Otago provides strategic oversight of teaching and learning policy and practice and academic programmes, support to our students as well as oversight of academic staff confirmation and promotion activities.

The Division consists of the following Units: Academic Committees and Services; Higher Education Development Centre; Distance Learning; Student Success; Quality Advancement Unit; University Library; English Language Centre - Te Puna o te Kī; Otago Pathway - Te Huarahi; Student Experience and Student Services. Student Services in turn includes: Te Huka Mātauraka - the Māori Centre, Pacific Island Centre, Career Development Centre, Disability Information & Support, Proctor’s Office, Te Whare Tāwharau, University Chaplains, Student Health, and Unipol - Recreation Services.

The University is committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations, and mātauraka Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution. We especially value our relationship with Kāi Tahu, the mana whenua within their takiwā of Te Waipounamu, and the University’s principal Treaty partner.

**_The role/Te mahi_**

We are seeking an experienced academic leader to provide strategic and operational leadership in the areas of learning and teaching in the University. In this role you will work to ensure that students enjoy an excellent learning and teaching experience and that the reputation of the University as a provider of high-quality education is enhanced.

This is a full-time, permanent appointment at Professorial level. The level of appointment is dependent on academic achievement, skills and experience.

Some of the key responsibilities for this role will include:

- Providing strategic advice on, and implement policy and procedural initiatives as appropriate, to enhance the quality of learning and teaching at the University.
- Leading the development, implementation and evaluation of the University’s Learning and Teaching plan.
- Facilitating the incorporation of te ao Māori and mātauraka Māori into the curriculum and modes of learning.
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the academic divisions, schools, departments, services divisions, and staff of the University to enhance learning and teaching.
- Developing and maintaining effective channels to work with students, including OUSA, Te Roopu Māori and the Otago Pacific Island Students Association and ensure that the student voice is included in learning and teaching developments.
- Maintaining a research profile and related outputs appropriate to the level of academic appointment.

A doctoral qualification is essential, as is extensive research experience. A high level of interest in, and enthusiasm for, learning and teaching is expected. As this is a leadership position, a proven senior management experience is important, including human resources and financial management.
