If you are appointed to the role, you will teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in Initial Teacher Education and Education Studies papers. If appointed as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, you will also supervise postgraduate research students and develop your own programme of research. If you are a New Zealand registered teacher, you may also visit initial teacher education students on professional experience.
The position provides the opportunity to work within a collegial and forward-looking department, committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and dedicated to excellence in teacher education. The exact nature of the appointment will depend on the successful candidate's skills and experience.

Te Kura Ākau Taitoka/The University of Otago College of Education is dedicated to the enhancement of educational practice through high quality teaching, scholarship, research, professional leadership and community service, to benefit mokopuna, ākoka, kaiako, whānau and the wider community (in local, national and international settings).

The successful candidate will be expected to have:
- Proficiency and capability in te reo Māori and established connections with Māori communities.
- A commitment to engaging with kā hapū o Ōtākou rūnaka and our papatipu rūnaka in Ōtepoti and Waihōpai.
- Demonstrated commitment to the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to equal opportunity.
- A commitment to developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues and to supporting the University's Māori, Pacific, and Sustainability strategic frameworks.
As a Pūkeka/Pūkeka Matua (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer), you will be expected to actively engage in research. You will also be actively involved in the recruitment of new research students and applying for and receiving external research funding.
If appointed as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, to be successful in this role you will have:
- A PhD degree.
- Demonstrated teaching experience at tertiary level.
- Relevant research experience and a corresponding publication record.
- New Zealand teacher registration and a current full practising certificate are desirable.
If appointed as a Tauira Mātāmua Riteka Kaio (Senior Professional Practice Fellow), you will be expected to contribute professional and mātauraka-based expertise to our programmes in ways that reinforce and promote inter-dependence between teaching, research and professional practice.
If appointed as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow, to be successful in this role you will have:
- A Master's degree.
- New Zealand teacher registration and current full practising certificate.
- A relevant professional qualification in teaching.
- Relevant professional experience in English, bilingual and/or Māori medium education.
- Knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and Te Aho Matua are desirable for this role.
If appointed as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow the opportunity exists to pursue doctoral study at the College of Education, but this is not a requirement.
The College of Education particularly welcomes applications from Māori and Pacific scholars.
This is a full-time (1 FTE), permanent, Ōtepoti/Dunedin based position available from early July 2025.
The appointment ranges for this role are:
- Senior Professional Practice Fellow - $102,092 to $132,796
- Lecturer - $94,084 to $111,056
- Senior Lecturer - $116,419 to $143,018
