Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Head of the Project Management Office - Permanent full-time position

Te Papa's purpose is to understand and treasure the past, to enrich the present, and to meet the challenges of the future.
Our vision is to be a Tiriti-based museum, where a collective commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is fostered and Māori exercise tino rangatiratanga.
Te Papa is more than just the national museum that houses New Zealand's treasures. It is a meeting place, a place for lifelong learning, and a place that inspires a sense of wonder and connection. Te Papa is also a commercially focused crown entity, and manages Tākina Events.
The Project Management Office at Te Papa is diverse in the projects we deliver - from exhibitions to public programmes, to commercial activity, to our operational requirements, to maintaining our buildings that house our National taonga, and the technology that keeps everything going. We are seeking someone who can weave the best of PMO practice and management, with a way of working that embraces our creativity and a Te Aō Maori approach into project delivery.
As you can see, we are looking for a special person. You'll have a technical background in project management, that's a given. But you'll also be creative, curious, a maker of connections and ready to embrace different ways of thinking and working to create something that works for Te Papa. You'll be a collaborator, someone who loves to partner with others to build an exciting future. Most importantly, you'll be a fantastic people leader who can continue to lead a team of talented project professionals that has a strong team culture.

**What you will do**:
The purpose of this position is to lead Te Papa's PMO. You'll continue to develop a PMO practice that contributes to Te Papa delivering extraordinary experiences, new knowledge and new connections to our audiences, and supports our foundational enabling infrastructure. Key accountabilities include:

- Be a great manager of the team - supporting a strong team culture and ensuring development and success for you people
- Be a connector - develop effective relationships across Te Papa's leadership to embed the role of the PMO and to ensure the PMO's contribution to Te Papa's success is optimised
- Be a champion for PMO practice - ensuring the toolkit is fit for purpose and reporting and insights flow up and out across leadership and governance levels

**To be successful in this position you will have**:

- Demonstrated people management expertise and experience leading and managing a team
- Demonstrated ability to work across an organisation, understand the different functions and identify and address organisational interdependencies and interconnectivities
- Well-developed ability to critically analyse complex information and make effective recommendations
- Solid track record of managing projects and at least 5+ years' experience managing a team of project managers within a project management office structure.
- Knowledge and understanding of effective programme, project and change management strategies, practices and principles
- Strong awareness of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi and demonstrated ability to embody this commitment in their work
- Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. MPM, Prince 2, Portfolio and Programme management qualifications)
- Highly developed skills in persuading, communicating and agreeing complex and challenging outcomes for the business at a senior leadership level

Experience in a relevant role in the museum, arts or creative sectors would be an advantage.
Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.
Prior to Te Papa confirming any offer of employment, pre-employment checks will be undertaken including criminal conviction history and reference checking as a minimum
