Wellington City, New Zealand Transpower Full time

Bring your expertise, commerciality, and customer centricity to Transpower
- Champion cost estimation best practice with internal and external partners
- Lead the growth of cost engineering capability across the organisation
- Newly created role in a busy Cost Engineering team supporting delivery of nationally critical high voltage infrastructure projects._

Transpower owns and operates the National Grid, the high-voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand. Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.

Our Grid Development division identifies and conveys our future Grid needs up to 30-plus years ahead and develops transmission asset management strategies to meet the strategic objectives as outlined in Transmission Tomorrow and Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko.

**About the team**

Tactical Engineering and Estimation provides the engineering support and expertise to the planning, investigations, and project delivery functions within Grid Development. It ensures that Transpower's objectives are met through quality, cost-effective engineering design which is carried out by external Engineering Consultants.

Our Cost Estimation Team of thirteen delivers an estimation service to support the scoping, investigation, and delivery of our grid capital projects and volumetric maintenance works. They are responsible for the cost estimation process which the wider business uses to produce cost estimates for capital and operational projects, regulatory control period (RCP) submissions, and strategic investigations.

**About the opportunity - a new role to ensure we meet our strategic objectives and deliver the major capital works programme**

As Principal Engineer - Cost Estimation, you'll work closely with the Cost Estimation Manager and play a key role in providing and guiding a higher level of cost engineering expertise within Transpower and representing the organisation externally to contracted service providers and consultancies in relation to the delivery of cost engineering services.

You'll provide leadership and guidance to team members, uplift capability, and achieve outputs that align with AACE standards, as well as achieve good outcomes for Transpower, customers, and ultimately New Zealand. This will see you working to identify, investigate, and implement ongoing improvements to estimating practices, procedures, and systems. By growing understanding of how a risk-based approach is used in practice and analysing past projects and future forecasts/industry trends, you'll improve accuracy of estimates, support optioneering, and provide advice on the maintenance of the cost integrity of cost estimation tools and data sets.

**What will you bring?**

To be considered, your cover letter and previous experience will clearly convey:

- A relevant tertiary degree in engineering and registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer (or equivalent)
- Experience leading a cost engineering approach in the delivery of projects or providing project costs for business cases
- Demonstrated ability to drive positive outcomes and navigate within a dynamic commercially orientated environment
- Experience in contract management, including improving the performance of outsourced consultants and service providers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including advocacy and influencing both internally and externally
