He angitūtanga | About the role
The Visitor Centre Lead will be part of the District Leadership Team, you will directly support the Supervisor and will work closely with both the Visitor Centre staff and the leadership team. You will lead, train and mentor staff members, plan, and schedule work for the team, and cultivate a strong health and safety culture.
DOC's Visitor Centres are the gateway to conservation, providing visitors with information to enhance their recreation experiences. This Visitor Centre team is passionate about the work they do and has a culture of inclusiveness and support with whanau at the core. You will be part of a team focused on delivering excellent customer service.
The Visitor Centre is open seven days a week, based in the heart of Oban, Stewart Island/Rakiura. You will work predominantly Monday to Friday but must be open to infrequent weekend work, if required.

**The role varies from day to day and can include**:

- Providing visitors with up to date information about recreational opportunities locally and throughout the country, local conservation projects, current and forecast weather, condition of tracks and huts, and transport available locally
- Promoting and selling national and local conservation recreation opportunities, including Great Walks bookings
- Promoting and selling conservation merchandise and the core range of products in the Visitor Centre
- Ensuring storytelling and interpretation are concise, relevant, and up to date; where possible using technology to tell these stories
- Preparing and updating information in recreation brochures, photobooks and other visitor publications
- Designing and implementing interpretation and information displays for use in the Visitor Centre as well as upgrading the space for themed weeks and or events
- Helping to train and support Visitor Centre Rangers
- Administration, banking, and retail stock control associated with the operation of a busy Visitor Centre
- Leading staff to manage the day-to-day operations of the Visitor Centre.

- Demonstrated experience in customer service
- Tech savvy, with ability to pick up new systems and databases quickly
- An understanding of recreation and tourism opportunities throughout New Zealand and knowledge of conservation and recreational activities available on Rakiura
- The ability to convey visitor safety information clearly, concisely and in a positive manner
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to maintain high standards and a positive attitude while working under pressure and/or performing repetitive tasks
- Enthusiasm for, and an active interest in, outdoor pursuits and conservation

**Desirable**:

- Current Driver's Licence
- Proven experience managing or leading a team
