**Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity**

The Whānau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHIRI) was developed with a pro equity focus of providing health services and care to whānau accessing and re-engaging with the health system. Developed with a kaupapa lens, for Māori by Māori, WHIRI is a critical service in mitigating unmet needs for Māori and Pacific patients who receive care from a hospital service. WHIRI aligns with the highly successful Whānau Ora approach, focussing on the needs and goals of the whānau, centred on improving equity for Māori and other priority populations whilst being grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the development of new ways of working in the health system, to address inequities within two pilot projects (one operational and the other is research) and the Whānau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHIRI) model of care:

1. Cancer WHIRI project (Health Research Council funded research)_**

Cancer pathways are not designed for Māori health gain. This study seeks to pilot the Cancer WHIRI program; a comprehensive, high quality, pandemic resilient, racism-free, hauora enhancing and responsive service for Māori accessing the start of the secondary care cancer pathway.

**2. Whānau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHRI) Planned Care**

The WHIRI model of care will be implemented in Planned Care for Māori and Pasifika attending an outpatient appointment. This kaupapa model of care supports whānau engagement and reduces the barriers to access often experienced by whānau. You will engage with patients and their whānau in conducting a Needs Based Assessment and provide appropriate education, resources and referrals according to the needs identified. This programme of work will embrace Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori in order to be effective for our Māori communities and fulfil our Te Tiriti obligations.

The Equity office team is part of the Māori Health Equity Directorate. Our goals are:

- Empowering whanau to make informed decisions around hauora
- Working in partnership to acknowledge and support values and beliefs
- The development of pro equity pathways throughout the organisation
- Creating systematic change within the organisation
- Embedding a Te Tiriti o Waitangi lens in the work we do support equity

**Mōu | About you**

Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:

- Three years or more experience working with whānau Māori and Pasifika
- Excellent communication skills
- Empathy, ability and confidence to engage people from a range of backgrounds
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Understanding of Tikanga Māori, Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori and the ability to engage appropriately in Māori settings
- Experience conducting interviews or survey’s with whānau or patients
