**Mō tēnei tūranga mahi - About the role**

The Student Advisor has allocated academic departments who they work closely with. They will collaborate with academic colleagues to support a positive and empowered learner experience. Student Advisors work closely with assigned Departments to ensure learners in that area are supported. The Student Advisor will work with other student advisors to ensure continuity of service can be maintained to students. In addition, the Student Advisor will assist with the organisation and production of a range of events.

This role focusses primarily on the pastoral care - supporting the safety and wellbeing of learners and aligned to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. The support of learners is a shared responsibility with academic colleagues and therefore it is imperative that effective and collaborative professional working relationships are established. With 'learners at the heart of everything we do' the role also encompasses supporting learner agency, autonomy, and Student Voice so that learners are partners in the design and review of the work.

The Student Advisor will generally have a focus and speciality in support at least one of the following cohorts of learners - Māori, Pacific, International, Refugee background or Youth.

- Demonstrated experience working effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Considerable experience in a tertiary learning environment
- Excellent communication skills especially listening and questioning.
- Bilingual in Japanese
- Experience and thorough understanding of and commitment to high quality service provision.
- An understanding of the academic, career and pastoral needs of tertiary students.
- An understanding of the demands of a tertiary learning environment, particularly as this impacts Māori, Pacific & disabled learners.
- Ability to facilitate joint problem solving in the tertiary education environment.
- A collaborative working style whilst able to work independently.
- Effective organisational skills
- Excellent time management
- Administrative skills and experience including project/event co-ordination.
- Highly effective technical skills to enhance continuous improvement and innovation.
- Highly effective written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to support individual and community agency and voice
