**Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role**

The Regional Manager Asia leads a team of both onshore and offshore based staff who drive NZ Customs' international work programme in the Asian region.

Reporting to the Director International, the role is a critical member of the leadership group responsible for progressing the international aspects of NZ Customs' vision, purpose, and ministerial priorities.

This role is responsible for day-to-day direction, management and people leadership of a team including welfare needs. This team delivers international operational outcomes and provides strategic direction, high-quality international policy advice and supports the delivery of specific programmes of work.

**To be successful as a Regional Manager Asia, the appointee requires the following knowledge, experience, skills and personal attributes**:

- Experience and/or understanding of international affairs and relationships;
- Knowledge of the conventions, structure and functions of Government and their relationship to the work of the New Zealand Customs Service, the border environment and the machinery of Government;
- Experience and understanding of Customs offshore operations or equivalent;
- Strong people management skills and the ability to lead, inspire and engage a team dispersed both within NZ and internationally;
- Sound interpersonal skills, and the ability to build and enhance successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
- Experience in working with different cultures and diverse people and delivering outcomes in a pragmatic way;
- Ability to successfully implement strategy to deliver outcomes that align with Customs' objectives;
- Experience and demonstrated competence in managerial functions including resource management, objectives-based planning, organising, risk management and reporting;
- Experience and demonstrated competence in understanding and mitigating organisational and reputational risk and preventing reputational damage to New Zealand and/or Customs;
- A relevant tertiary education qualification or equivalent (desirable, but not essential);
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
