KiwiRail’s activities are regulated by a number of health and safety regulators including Maritime NZ, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency, and WorkSafe NZ. We also have strong interaction with the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC).

This role is based in Wellington.

**Your Role**:
The Zero Harm (ZH) Regulatory Lead is primarily responsible for carrying out Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) activities that support effective regulatory management of the Interislander business unit in KiwiRail. Key responsibilities include:

- External interface with regulators and the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) regarding SHE investigations, safety assessments/audits, and licence conditions/enforcements.
- Manage the process of seeking regulatory approval for major changes in the business through the variation of KiwiRail’s licences to operate.
- Internal interface with KiwiRail Business Units, Zero Harm, and legal teams to drive regulatory corrective actions and improvements on a project management basis, support SHE risk and change management activities, review and communicate internal investigation and assurance outcomes to regulators.
- Drive continuous improvement activity within the business to meet and exceed regulatory expectations and requirements, including audit of the maritime Safety Management System, licence conditions, and corrective action implementation. Work collaboratively with peers on rail and interface regulatory compliance matters.
- Build effective relationships with external stakeholders to ensure regulatory obligations and joint working/interoperability is undertaken effectively throughout the industry.

Health and Safety is an important part of how KiwiRail operates. You will be a safety leader and will be expected to “walk the safety talk”.

**Your Skills**:

- 5+ years’ experience as a health and safety professional.
- Broad health and safety related experience across an organisation, preferably in maritime operating or heavy plant environment.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex issues and information to present in simple, clear ways to enable effective decisions.
- Significant experience in a large, complex organisation.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships at senior levels of an organisation, and with external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to operate and deliver in complex and demanding circumstances.
- Sound organisation and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to work on numerous requirements and tasks simultaneously.
- The ability to establish creditability and interact confidently with internal and external stakeholders, including having the confidence to raise issues and provide constructive feedback where required.
- Expertise at analysing, evaluating and providing verbal and written reports and information to internal and external stakeholders.
