The position requires an experienced and capable scientist/engineer to lead and manage the Human Sciences research team and its associated research programme.
The Human Sciences team provides timely and relevant defence science and technology advice, authoritative recommendations, trends, risks and implications to key stakeholders.
This Human Sciences research programme is currently being scoped and the programme/team lead will play a key role in defining the future direction of the programme. Indicative areas within the Human Science research programme include:

- Human-Machine Teaming: The integration of soldier/sailor/aviator and military autonomous/robotic systems, including interactions with AI enabled systems; trust and autonomy; individual, team, and mission performance metrics; and experimentation/trials in live and simulated environments.
- Human aspects of Cyber-Security: Human sciences support to DTA's Cyber research programme; the identification and mitigation of human aspects of cyber security, including awareness, education and training methods; improved resilience at individual, team, and organization level; and support tools for enhancing individual and group sensitivity.
- Human Performance: The evaluation and use of technology to support/supplement effective soldier/sailor/aviator performance with a specific focus on the cognitive/social domain as it relates to workload, situational awareness, decision making and skill retention.

The role will define, develop and direct the research programme. This includes leading the planning, execution, engaging stakeholders, leading collaboration with domestic and international partners, managing and advocating for resources, reporting on progress, and coaching and mentoring team members.

The position requires an experienced professional with significant scientific, engineering or technical expertise, who will take responsibility for the scientific output of the staff reporting to them.

**To be considered for next steps for this role, you will have**:

- A strong understanding and expertise in the Human Sciences applied to large, complex systems;
- Evidence of keen analytical skills that demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the interdependencies of human characteristics and abilities with technology, and how this shapes system performance;
- Specific expertise in one or more Human Science specialisms such as social and behavioural sciences, cognitive and social psychology, cultural anthropology or human geography;
- Broad knowledge of Ergonomics/Human Engineering, Cognitive Science, Applied Psychology, Operability Testing and Experimentation, and Human Reliability;
- Experience in managing R&D efforts for an organisation and contributing to overall business management or strategic planning;
- Experience in project management, multi-disciplinary team leading (including remote/hybrid) and development, and mentoring of junior personnel;
- Ability to deal with problems of considerable scope and complexity;
- Computer literacy and ability to use specialised technical software and equipment;
- A strong work ethic and a desire to enhance human sciences across NZDF;
- Strong communication skills and a proven ability to engage with customers/stakeholders, systems users and other professionals; and
- A full driver's licence is essential, as is the ability to travel domestically and internationally when needed.

Salary offered will be dependent on your skills, experience and qualifications.
