Mō te tūnga - About the role
The Senior Economic Advisor supports the Labour Leader and MPs by analysing and developing responses to government policy announcements, helping set and implement Labour's strategy for a range of policy portfolios, and supporting the development of Labour's policy platform.
Tō kete - What you will bring to the role
We are looking for someone with exceptional research and analytical skills, and a demonstrated ability to translate complex economic concepts into actionable policy recommendations. This requires that you keep abreast of daily economic news and topical financial issues, identify risks and policy opportunities, and work the MPs to develop policies and response.
You'll be required to research, analyse, and develop evidence-based economic policies that align with our values and objectives. You'll provide strategic input into the formulation of economic policies, considering both short-term and long-term implications.
Ideally, you will hold a Master's or Ph.D. in Economics, Public Policy, or a related field, with a strong academic record. Understanding of New Zealand's economic landscape and policy challenges is an advantage, as is significant experience in economic analysis, policy development, or economic research.

**Ngā haepapa - Responsibilities**:

- Political management of economic and financial issues
- Communications with the Labour Leader, members of Parliament, and the Leader's office team
- Contribute to the development of the Labour's economic agenda and strategic planning
- Identify emerging economic issues and propose proactive strategies to address challenges and opportunities
- Research, analyse, and develop evidence-based economic policies that align with our values and objectives
- Provide strategic input into the formulation of economic policies, considering both short-term and long-term implications
- Utilise economic modelling and statistical analysis to assess the impact of proposed policies on various sectors of the economy
- Interpret economic data and trends to inform policy decisions and support evidence-based advocacy
- Prepare comprehensive policy briefings, reports, and presentations for party leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders
- Clearly and effectively communicate complex economic concepts to non-experts, facilitating informed decision-making
- Mentor and guide junior economists within the team, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment

Appointments will be based on skills and experience. All employees who work for MPs are employed on an 'events based' agreement, with your employment linked to your MP (in this case, the Leader of the Opposition). This role is based in the Parliamentary Precinct for 40 hours per week.
