Job Overview & Purpose

Working within Rabobank’s regional tax team (Australia / New Zealand) to ensure compliance with tax reporting, payment, and accounting obligations in Australia and New Zealand across a range of taxes including income tax, GST, FBT, withholding tax, Approved Issuer Levy (in New Zealand), and insurance levies (in Australia).

Based at Rabobank’s new New Zealand headquarters in Hamilton, the role will primarily focus on Rabobank’s New Zealand activities, whilst also assisting the team in supporting Rabobank’s Australian activities.

Context of Job:
Group Tax Region Australia, New Zealand is at present a team of four (Head of Tax, Senior Tax Manager, and two Tax Compliance Managers) responsible for managing Rabobank’s tax obligations in Australia and New Zealand.
The team is based in Sydney and has historically had an Australia focus. Given the continued growth of the New Zealand business, a need has arisen for a Tax Compliance Manager, based in New Zealand, with a focus on New Zealand tax matters.

**Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities**:
As part of the Group Tax team, you will support the team in its role of ensuring that Rabobank meets its tax obligations in Australia and New Zealand.

This is a new role, having primary responsibility for Rabobank’s tax compliance obligations in New Zealand. You will be the first point of contact for most New Zealand tax matters. We expect that this will account for most of your time, with the balance being spent on Australian / regional tax matters.

This role would suit a senior consultant / recently appointed manager from a New Zealand chartered firm looking for a first role inhouse, who has or is open to obtaining significant experience in and exposure to Australian tax matters. It will be a broad role, requiring someone who is very hands on (preparation of tax calculations, posting of journals, understanding of operational processes, etc) whilst being comfortable dealing with a wide range of personnel in the bank, from front office staff, back office staff, through to senior management.

The main components of the role are expected to be undertaking, or assisting the Group Tax team in undertaking, the following to the extent (predominantly) relevant to New Zealand:
Performance of tax compliance processes (1st line responsibilities), including:

- Preparation of New Zealand income tax returns;
- Preparation and posting of clearing journals, preparation of quarterly tax accounting calculations and posting of journals, monthly review and certification of tax accounts, bi-annual head office reporting;
- Some monthly / quarterly tax reporting processes;
- Management of the relationship with the Inland Revenue and TMNZ;
- Maintenance of transfer pricing documentation for New Zealand;
- Provision of tax advice to internal clients and general tax support to business and operational areas of the Bank.

Oversight of processes performed by other teams (2nd line responsibilities), including the following processes:

- Some corporate tax compliance work;
- FATCA/CRS compliance;
- Withholding of tax on interest;
- Withholding of tax on staff salaries;
- Maintenance of the tax fixed assets register;
- Managing tax aspects of cars provided to staff;
- Managing tax issues for the bank arising from expats / inpats, and monitoring business processes to ensure arms’ length pricing on cross-border transactions;
- Systems/product reviews, testing and implementation of the bank’s various internal projects from a tax operations and compliance perspective.

**Qualifications**:

- Tertiary qualification in Accounting and Taxation Law.
- Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) or Certified Accountant (CA) qualification.

**Experience**:

- Manager-level with at least five (5) years hands-on New Zealand tax experience preferably gained in the banking/ financial services industry. Capable senior consultants will be considered.
- Tax accounting and compliance experience essential.
- FATCA/CRS experience viewed favourably.

**Knowledge**:

- Advanced tax risk awareness.
- Good technical knowledge of the New Zealand tax system.
- Advanced Excel skills. Proficiency / experience with Power BI is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of the accounting standards regarding tax effect accounting.
- Strong knowledge of banking products and working knowledge of the finance industry in general.

**Skills**:

- Able to make appropriate commercial, tax and practical decisions, exercise personal judgement and contribute to, and challenge others, in the general decision-making process.
- Self-motivated and able to communicate with others to obtain results.
- Ability to extract and manipulate data from accounting, management and finance data systems such as PeopleSoft including preparation and uploading of journals.
