About the role

An important and significant opportunity exists to join New Zealand Police and the Employment Relations (ER) Team as the Director of ER.

This is a broad and critical organisational role. The Director ER is responsible for three key functions, which impact in some way on all 15,000 of our people. These include:

- Resolving employment challenges in a holistic, people centric way through our Employment Resolutions Service, Early Intervention and Kia Tū functions.
- Leading our industrial strategy, policy and workplace reforms (including taking a strategic approach to collective bargaining and our remuneration system), so that our work and employee terms and conditions support a modern policing service, through our Industrial Relations Service and Remuneration Team
- Providing robust, effective and timely legal advice on challenging and complex employment issues through our Employment Legal Service.

ER is a high-performing Team. We’re looking for an employment relations expert with credibility and proficiency in the sector, who has a track record in people leadership and lifting the capability of Team’s you’ve led. You’ll thrive in working in a large operational organisation, creating clarity from complexity and be experienced in providing strategic employment relations advice to senior leaders and executive teams.

You will bring an enterprise mindset and a ‘can do’ attitude to support the strategic direction of the Team to ensure it can deliver on the current and future needs of the Police Executive and wider organisation. Most importantly, you’ll live our values and role model the type of culture and leadership we want our whole organisation to achieve.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Lead the delivery of holistic, people-centric employment resolution services.
- Lead the development of an industrial strategy, workplace reforms and terms and conditions (including collective bargaining and remuneration design) that support a modern police workforce, and that value the people, culture and leadership transformation we’re looking for.
- Lead the provision of confidential, timely and effective employment relations and legal advice to senior leaders and the Executive.
- Ensure robust systems, frameworks, policies and processes are in place to support delivery of timely, effective and efficient employment related legal advice and services.
- Act as a conduit for relationship management with unions.
- Work effectively with People Operations and Conduct and Integrity to provide a collaborative and cohesive service, with clearly delineated roles and responsibilities.
