As System Operator, we run the wholesale electricity market and operate the power system so that New Zealand homes and businesses can access the electricity they need every second of every day.
As the heart of the power system, we connect the generators of electricity with electricity retailers (who on-sell it to consumers) through the wholesale electricity market. We then manage the flow of that electricity across Transpower's high-voltage transmission network to each of the 29 local lines companies that supply individual homes and businesses across their low-voltage networks as well as carrying electricity to a number of large industrial customers connected directly to the national grid.
As Grid Owner we need to ensure the grid is well maintained and able to meet the service expectations of all New Zealanders. This is at a time when the demands on our network of lines and substations are growing to support the Aotearoa's decarbonisation, we'll be spending 40% more on the grid in the next 5 years to meet this goal.
About the team
The Operations Planning team coordinates and assesses outages and provides engineering advice to enable the safe and secure operation of the power system through our real-time control room functions. This includes providing strategic advice on Operations Planning, providing power flow analysis and modelling, and engineering support to enable Transpower in its role as System Operator to meet its principal performance obligation.
The team develops and publishes a Grid Owner outage plan for all Transpower outages for the current year and coordinates changes to the plan during the year, working across both Transpower's own service providers and customers such as generators, large industrial plants, and local distribution companies.
In carrying out this key role, the team supports the real time operations of the power system, how the wholesale market functions, and planning for outages of both maintenance and projects on the grid.
About the opportunity - due to lateral promotion
You'll lead the team (5 leaders and a total geographically dispersed team of 24) and processes that are responsible for providing outage planning and to enable work to be carried out on the Grid, and changes to be made to the network while managing power system security and efficient market operation.
This is critical work to get right and spans Transpower's roles as system operator and grid owner under the Electricity Industry Participation Code (the Code.) You'll have a window into the world of Generators (and generator outages) and play a pivotal role in providing process and strategic leadership to deliver internal and industry outage co-ordination requirements under both the System Operator Service and as a crucial part of Transpower's Grid Works Planning process.

**As Transpower continues to scale, you'll take ownership of**:

- Driving excellence throughout the internal and external customer engagement and engineering elements of Operations Planning
- Enabling planned work on the grid and coordinating generator and distributor outage requirements while ensuring system security and efficient market operation
- Delivering our system operator operations planning services in line with regulatory requirements. These services include the outage coordination, system operator gate keeper for network model updates, and transmission commission test and plan reviews.
- Delivering the grid owner outage planning services working with Transpower's Grid Delivery division
- Providing impartial advice in our role as system operator while also supporting our grid owner planning functions

What will you bring?
Passionate about continuous improvement and known for your ability to optimise at scale and drive outcomes whilst collaborating effectively both internally and externally, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

- Experience as a line manager (ideally of technical and operational staff) with good examples of working cross enterprise to achieve outcomes through others (both direct and indirect reports)
- Sound commercial and customer acuity
- Well-developed understanding of the New Zealand market and power system
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to all levels of an organisation
- Demonstrated ability to develop and build the capability of a diverse, technically orientated team
- The ability to facilitate and work in a matrix management structure
