We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a clinical pharmacist with extensive knowledge and experience in Critical Care as well as strong leadership capabilities to join our progressive Clinical Pharmacy Service at Counties Manukau

Middlemore Hospital is a large and progressive tertiary hospital located in South Auckland and is unique in terms of the diverse, high-needs population we serve. Our service is committed to providing excellent patient-centred care and achieving equitable health outcomes through collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation. We are proud to be one of the leading Clinical Pharmacy services in Australasia with established systems and technology to optimise safe and effective use of medicines for our patients, from admission to discharge. Our clinical pharmacists have a strong presence and are well-regarded across the organisation. Our work is highly valued not just in the direct patient care setting but also in clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team as well as systems improvement and governance. We are invested in building workforce capabilities and supporting our pharmacists to achieve their goals as a clinician and to make a lasting impact within and beyond the organisation. The diverse and complex clinical scenarios that we encounter and help manage every day make Counties Manukau an exceptional environment for lifelong learning. Furthermore, our recently updated career framework provides a clear and transparent pathway for our pharmacists to progress in their careers.

The Critical Care Complex (CCC) at Middlemore Hospital comprises of the Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit and aims to provide specialised medical and nursing care to adult and paediatric patients who are critically ill. Both units are staffed by a team of highly experienced and professional doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals. The Critical Care pharmacist is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team with roles and responsibilities that are diverse and stimulating. The core clinical component includes participating in the daily medical rounds in CCC to provide timely therapeutic recommendations, conducting clinical review and optimisation of pharmaceutical care, as well as ensuring safety and continuity of care at points of transfer. The Critical Care pharmacist also plays a crucial role in incident investigation, risk management, drug use evaluation, quality improvement, service development as well as training and education of Critical Care and Pharmacy staff.

Due to the need to grow Critical Care capacity across the country, we have recently gained an additional Critical Care pharmacist FTE. This is a great opportunity for us to increase our clinical expertise and capacity in the Critical Care space, optimise service delivery to our patients and clinicians, and look to extend the pharmacist role, including consolidating our collaboration with the Patient At Risk (PAR) team and attendance at resuscitations around the hospital.

We are looking for a motivated, highly skilled clinical pharmacist with the relevant experience and leadership qualities to step into this role as a Specialist. Alternatively, this is a rare opportunity for an experienced clinical pharmacist who is passionate about a career in Critical Care to develop from Pre-specialist to Specialist through our training pathway and established career framework. In addition, this role can cater for the pharmacist prescriber scope.
