- Salary range: $132,417 - $160,472 depending on experience Tēnei tūranga - About the Role: The Principal Advisor Regulation is a leadership position in the Building Performance and Engineering team. They proactively provide high quality policy, strategic, and operational, advice on problems in the New Zealand Building Code to support the construction of safe, healthy, and durable buildings. They provide thought leadership for the maintenance of the existing Building Code regulatory system and the development of frameworks supporting growth and innovation across the building system. They assess settings in the regulatory system and develop advice on possible implications and solutions, including regulatory analysis of Building Code performance requirements and current regulatory frameworks.

You will be supporting decision making from a best practice regulatory and policy process perspective, as well as coaching, training and mentoring technical advisors, engineers, and architects in their individual project work on regulatory principles, concepts, and practices.

The role of Principal Advisor may be of interest to you if you have a background in public policy, economics, law or as a regulator. A background in building or construction will be considered an asset.

For the role of Principal Advisor Regulation, ideally you will have the following:

- A good base of experience in public policy, regulation or transferrable skills from an advisory, legal or similar role,
- Experience of working on technically and/or politically and/or legally complex projects,
- Bring knowledge of policy and regulation development disciplines and processes,
- Be a logical thinker and problem solver with a healthy level of curiosity,
- Ability to quickly assimilate new information or areas of work,
- Enjoy working on complex problems, generating ideas and coming up with solutions,
- Have the ability to build relationships with others and work collaboratively,
- The ability to work through ambiguity and deliver results,
- Good communication skills - able to share knowledge clearly,
- Experience in a regulatory or Government setting,
- Ability to brief Ministers and senior Managers,
- Ability to develop and maintain critical relationships with internal and external stakeholders,
- Good leadership, coaching and mentoring skills and ability to motivate others. Passion for, and experience with, developing capability in team members,
- Knowledge and experience of working with the Building Code or Building Act 2004 or similar legislation is desirable.
