Are you looking to broaden your commercial law experience? We are looking to recruit an experienced commercial solicitor for a position within our Agriculture, Forestry & Corporate Law team within the Legal Services Directorate of the Ministry for Primary Industries. This position is a full time, fixed term position through to 30 June 2024. This role would also be a great opportunity for a secondment to gain invaluable experience from the wide range of commercial work that MPI offers. We are open to flexible working.
The role focuses on supporting the work of the MPI Agriculture and Investment Services Business Unit, in particular the Investment Programmes Directorate. The Investment Programmes Directorate is responsible for leading the development and implementation of a wide range of interesting and important investment programmes that support economic growth, sustainable resource use, and productivity in the primary sector. Funding and support are offered across a wide range of the primary sector and can include climate change, farming, fishing and aquaculture, food and fibre sectors, Māori agribusiness, disaster and crises support, integrated farm planning, and regional economic development.
Solicitors and Senior Solicitors in MPI Legal Services are responsible for providing high quality, timely and practical legal advice. They may handle a complex and demanding workload with a high degree of autonomy, with the supervision and assistance of more senior colleagues as appropriate. They are expected to work across MPI with a varied focus, develop technical excellence in a variety of areas of primary industries law, and confidently assess and manage legal risk.

Mō tō mātou rōpū - About the Team
The Agriculture, Forestry & Corporate Law Team, within which this role sits, provides legal advice to the Ministry for Primary Industries across the Ministry in areas relating to forestry, agriculture, commercial and corporate law.
The team sits within the wider Legal Services directorate. Legal Services covers a wide range of interesting work including commercial arrangements, public law operational advice, legislative development, involvement in emergency responses for food, trade, and biosecurity, prosecutions, civil and public law litigation support, legal and organisational risk management, and training. While Solicitors/Senior Solicitors are appointed to a particular team, we work very collaboratively across teams.

Mōu - About You

**In order to be considered for these roles, you will need**:

- A relevant tertiary qualification in law and a current New Zealand practising certificate, or the immediate ability to hold one.
- Post-admission experience in commercial law or another relevant area of law.
- Good attention to detail and drafting skills
- Ability to identify and make process improvements.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships, good communication skills, and a collaborative work style.
- A can-do attitude with proven track record in the delivery of useful and high-quality legal advice.
- Clear judgement and an ability to recognise and understand the implications of legal advice.

In order to be considered for the Senior Solicitor role, you will also need:

- Significant post-admission experience in commercial law, and/or other relevant areas of law.
- A proven track record in building strong relationships with, and providing useful advice to, senior-level officials.
- Experience in providing leadership with commercial law or public law projects.
- Experience and a real interest in supervising, mentoring, and coaching less experienced solicitors.
- Ability to support the team Manager in the planning and management of resources and making process improvements for the benefit of the team, directorate, and our clients.

**Desirable**:

- Public law experience
- Experience working in-house for a large regulator.
- Experience with the development and design of legislation.
- Experience managing litigation
- Knowledge of legislation administered by MPI and the regulatory environment in which MPI operates.
