The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's (DPMC's) purpose is to advance an ambitious, resilient and well-governed New Zealand.
The Legal Services Team provides legal advice and support to the department, and the National Emergency Management Agency ('NEMA' - a departmental agency hosted by DPMC), on a wide range of corporate, policy and operational matters relating to national security, emergency management, child wellbeing and poverty reduction and much much more.

We are seeking up to two lawyers for a fixed term/secondment until June 2024, being either:
*
- Principal Solicitor or Senior Solicitor
- Senior Solicitor or Solicitor

(We also welcome applicants seeking part-time role)
The positions have been established to provide additional legal support to the Legal Services Team to support the department and All-of-Government response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry COVID-19 (Lessons Learnt) and increased corporate work across the department.
The purpose of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Lessons Learned from Aotearoa New Zealand's Response to COVID-19, is to strengthen Aotearoa New Zealand's preparedness for, and response to, any future pandemic by identifying those lessons learned from New Zealand's response to COVID-19 that should be applied in preparation for any future pandemic. The department will support the Inquiry by co-ordinating the All-of-Government input and facilitating and supporting DPMC's input.

**Principal Solicitors provide advice on**:

- policy and machinery of government, legislative drafting, litigation and inquiries, and related matters for the department's business units and NEMA. This includes advice during the response to and recovery from emergency events and other crises. Advising at times of emergency events and other crises may require flexible working and additional hours to meet the requirements and demand of the response;
- a range of issues facing the department and NEMA, including assisting with contracts and procurement, statutory interpretation, official information and privacy matters, health and safety advice, and various other matters that may arise.

Principal Solicitors demonstrate expertise as a leader and work closely with, and in support of, other members of the Legal Services team to ensure legal advice provided to DPMC and NEMA is robust, fit for purpose, and mitigates risks for the department and government.

**Senior Solicitors and Solicitors provide advice on**:

What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu
- Current New Zealand practising certificate
- Experience advising on and/or managing litigation, inquiries and other reviews
- Good knowledge of Machinery of Government including Cabinet and Parliamentary processes
- Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Mâori tikanga
- Excellent written skills
- General corporate or commercial experience
- An ability to think creatively to provide innovation and insightful solutions
- Excellent written skills
- Principal and Senior Solicitors also bring strong experience and confidence engaging, influencing, and advising at senior leadership levels as well as the skills and ability to work with diverse teams and people
- Principal Solicitors have at least 10 years post qualification experience, Senior Solicitors have at least 6 years relevant post qualification experience, Solicitors generally have less than 6 years experience.
