Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

As New Zealand's environmental regulator, the work we do today, helps shape the future of our tomorrow.

Our purpose | To tātou kaupapa

We are the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), New Zealand’s independent environmental regulator. Our role is important; to help protect our country’s unique way of life by looking out for the health of its environment, its economy and its people.

Our kaupapa is about making the right decisions, based on evidence, mātauranga, and science. We are passionate people working as one EPA to encourage big ideas and bold goals.

What we achieve today helps shape the future of New Zealand for generations to come. We welcome you to join us on our journey to a healthy environment that benefits us all.

Jump in the waka - make history with us.

About our group | Mō te roopu

The purpose of Kaupapa Kura Taiao (Māori Policy and Operations Group) is to provide high-level strategic leadership, policy and operational advice to the Chief Executive, wider Executive and EPA Board to enable the incorporation and consideration of Māori perspectives across all EPA policies, processes and decisions. This includes providing advisory and executive support to Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao, the EPA’s statutory Māori Advisory Committee.

He Whetū Mārama is the framework that guides the EPA in the undertaking of its statutory and other obligations to Māori. It is based on our EPA wawata which recognises that the unique relationship of Māori to the environment informs EPA decision making. The group leads the development and implementation of organisational strategies and frameworks to give effect to our wawata and to influence matters in relation to the EPA’s day-to-day work under the various Environmental Acts EPA works with.

The group scans and researches emerging issues, trends and innovations that contribute to building knowledge and understanding of the equal contribution of mātauranga and Māori perspectives alongside science and other perspectives in relation to the environmental decision making of the EPA and its associated committees.

The group promotes knowledge and understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi within the EPA, including the development of cultural capability of EPA staff and decision makers.

About the role | Mō te tūnga

In July 2020, the EPA launched its mātauranga framework, a tool to support decision-makers to respectfully test and probe mātauranga in decision-making processes. A first for New Zealand, the EPA is proud to be leading at the cutting edge of such work. Our current focus is on implementing the framework and weaving mātauranga into the work that we do. This involves ongoing engagement with potential decision makers, our EPA staff, Māori networks, industry, the science and research community and other government agencies. We aim to provide a seamless experience as the mātauranga framework becomes an integral part of our EPA way of working.

The team is an enthusiastic bunch who are required to communicate effectively with all levels of the organisation. To be successful in this role, you will be someone who has excellent written and verbal communication skills, we are looking for someone with an inherently positive and proactive approach who can hit the ground running in this rewarding role.

You will be interested in how the unique perspective and knowledge of Māori informs EPA decision making while broadening your understanding of environmental issues from a Māori perspective is of great interest to you.

You will work closely with recognised Māori experts, including the members of Ngā Kaihautū Tikanga Taiao, and Te Herenga, a network of Māori resource and environmental managers, practitioners and experts. Working with these groups, we seek continual improvement of the value and effectiveness of Māori engagement in EPA decision making.

We are open to hearing from Advisors of all levels who want to build on their current experience - if you have some or all of the skills we are looking for along with a can do attitude, this role can be tailored to suit We are also open to an inter-agency secondment (12 months plus) for those Advisors looking to develop their skills in another Government agency.

About you | Mōhou ake

We are looking for an individual with a range of skills and capabilities including:
