The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) is the regulatory body that maintains the registers of intellectual property interests and contributes to international and national policy setting in relation to intellectual property systems and processes, as well as IP awareness and international engagement and cooperation.

This is a newly established role at IPONZ, and we are looking for a fantastic person to join our team. The role does not stand alone, it will be closely supported by the National Manager, by the rest of the IPONZ management team, and by Te Pou Whakatairanga (Māori Directorate). Working together (mahi tahi), we all support each other to succeed in our roles.

The Manager IP Māori and IP Committees Secretariat provides high quality specialist strategic and pragmatic advice and programme design to ensure that IPONZ is well positioned to deliver on its part of the Crown’s responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to deliver IP services to meet its regulatory obligations.

The role supports the development of the IPONZ Māori Capability and Engagement Strategy, and leads a new, strategic programme of work and initiatives to deliver on this commitment. The role supports IPONZ to enhance our capability to deliver on our responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The role manages the IPONZ Māori Committees, ensuring all the committees are supported, engaged and effective in fulfilling their statutory roles. This includes leading the work to set up the new Māori Plant Varieties Committee.
The role is responsible for leading the IPONZ engagement with Māori, and provides specialist advice on how our services, interactions and engagement could be improved to better meet the needs and aspirations of Māori.

- Knowledge in te ao Māori.
- Preferably good fluency in te reo Māori. At a minimum the ability to take part in general conversation with speakers of te reo Māori, understand most of what is said and contribute relevant comments.
- Expert understanding of Crown responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations and needs of Māori.
- Proven demonstrated experience of advancing both Crown aspirations and the aspirations of Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Proven experience working in Māori policy and service delivery agency or partnership with Māori communities and organisations, especially those involved in Te Tiriti claims, are prioritised.
- Experience and achievement in working with senior leadership teams and providing high level strategic advice in a complex environment.
