About Us
The Investment Policy Team in MBIE’s Economic Development and Transitions Branch plays an important role in ensuring New Zealand has the right investment settings and markets to catalyze capital investment and business development. We provide advice on creating an investment environment that enables the right kind of investors and lenders to provide finance to successful, high-potential businesses.

Our work includes understanding New Zealand’s evolving capital markets, choices that businesses make, and how to influence shifts in investment towards new or undercapitalized sectors or firms which support our economic development goals of higher productivity, higher wages and lower emissions.

The Investment Policy team comprises approximately 10 policy staff. We have three priority areas of work:

- Supporting early-stage Capital Markets;
- Improving SME Access to Finance; and
- Investment Attraction and investor migrants

We work together with a diverse range of stakeholders, both private and public, to understand the investment environment and the impact of government interventions and policy settings. We work closely with and have policy oversight for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (investment) and New Zealand Growth Capital Partners.

In the Economic Development and Transitions (EDT) branch of MBIE, we exist alongside a number of other economic development policy functions, including Industry Policy, Enterprise Policy and Just Transition Partnerships. There are regular opportunities for staff to work across the branch.

**Tēnei tūranga - About the Role**:
In this role, you will have the opportunity to play a prominent role across Investment Policy’s three priority workstreams, owning relationships with other teams and private sector stakeholders, and ultimately making recommendations to Ministers that are both principled and practical.

As well as leading particular workstreams, you will be expected to lean into other parts of the investment policy and economic development work programme, in alignment with your strengths and goals, working with and alongside others.

You will bring a wealth of experience in policy development and a broad toolkit, which you have used while working at the centre of government. Ideally, you will have some experience and knowledge directly relevant to the team’s priority work areas, or more general experience in economics or finance. Your well-practiced skillset and work style should work in harmony with our team.

Our work involves strategic and practical ideas and advice. Whether you are focusing on investment attraction, finance for SMEs, or early-stage capital markets, the role will require good relationship management, heightened critical thinking and your experience at telling a cogent, evidence-based story.

**Desirable**:

- Seasoned policy professional with experience working in central government, including experience working with and advising Ministers.
- Experience absorbing complex information, think critically and laterally, and put forward a well-argued case in a variety of communication modes.
- Ideally, you will have some knowledge of and interest in the business investment environment and economic development policy.
- Experience with mentoring or overseeing junior staff - or clear potential and the desire to play this role in a policy team.
- A relevant tertiary qualification
