Otago Medical School’s RMIP programme for fifth-year medical students was established in Southland in 2007 and is currently delivered from seven sites across the South and lower North Islands by a closeknit and enthusiastic team of academic and non-academic teaching staff working in rural clinical practice.

The aim of the programme is to provide an innovative, patient-centred, rural community-based and educationally sound medical undergraduate experience. It is intended that the combination of experiential learning with high quality interprofessional teaching in rural sites will encourage interested students to pursue a career in rural medical practice; enhance links between rural general practice, rural hospitals and urban teaching hospitals; and provide rural academic career opportunities, thereby encouraging recruitment and retention of rural doctors.

**_The Role/Te mahi_**

An essential part of the **Southland/Central Otago Regional Convenor (Senior Professional Practice Fellow) **role is undertaking the convenorship duties for the Rural Medical Immersion programme. The successful applicant will be responsible for the annual cohort of 5th year RMIP students (currently three) based in Southland/Central Otago for the full academic year (February-October). Duties for the role will include organising student’s local programme attachments, delivering weekly tutorials and marking quarterly assessments.

This position provides the opportunity to work within a well-established programme and team that is committed to improving health outcomes for all through high quality teaching. You may be already teaching in rural health and looking for an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with great students wanting to upskill to provide the best outcomes in rural medical settings

- Be medically qualified and be actively engaged with, or have significant experience in, living and practising rural generalist medicine within the Central Otago/Southland community.
- Hold vocational registration in General Practice and/or Rural Hospital Medicine, or the equivalent, and have teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
