Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many.
Te whiwhinga mahi / The Opportunity
Do you want the opportunity to hone your policy expertise and contribute to solving complex courts system issues that impact and underpin the social fabric of people in Aotearoa New Zealand?
Our work in the Justice Policy Group is wide-ranging, with opportunities to shape thinking and drive change across the justice and social sectors. It is important and challenging work, which will test your critical thinking and collaborative skills every day.
We are seeking a policy advisor to join the Courts System Policy Team. If you are interested in improving the experience for people that use our courts and ensuring stronger access to justice, then this is the role for you. This team provides policy advice that supports the effective and efficient operation of our courts and coronial systems and offers a unique opportunity to work across all three branches of Government. This role includes advising on key constitutional principles, such as judicial independence, procedural fairness, and open justice, and working closely with the judiciary, legal profession and other stakeholders. We are responsible for key pieces of legislation, such as the Criminal Procedure Act, Criminal Disclosure Act and Evidence Act.
He pūkenga tou / Skills and experience
- Problem solving skills. Can you think analytically and critically? Do you find complex problems interesting, and have a knack for solving them?
- Communication skills. Are you an excellent communicator? Can you write clearly, in a way that simplifies complex information? Do you ask questions to improve your understanding?
- Relationship skills. Do you care about helping people and have a strong sense of integrity? Are you self-aware and trustworthy, with a willingness to learn from others? Do you work to build and maintain relationships?
- Initiative. Are you motivated to go beyond the immediate task, problem or issue? Do you ask for help and develop your judgement over time?
Experience with the legislative process or legal training would be an advantage, but is not essential.
**In turn, we will**:
- prioritise your well-being and professional development
- provide opportunities to:
- work on a broad range of important and challenging policy issues
- be coached by experienced policy professionals
- provide a flexible working environment.
