Te tūnga | The role
This role is Permanent based in either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Reporting to the Pouwhakahaere - Nga Kapuinga | Senior Manager - Statistical Registers, you will be a member of the Statistical Registers Design team, working in tandem with our other Principal Analyst who has an economic focus.
You will bring your passion for the social and population domain to propel Stats NZ towards becoming an administrative data first organisation. The Nga Kapuinga team is positioned to take a leadership role in developing the future state integrated data system, connecting societal, economic, and environmental data. This work is at the cutting edge and there will be considerable opportunity to influence strategically across Stats NZ, our customers and internationally. A first initiative will be to contribute to the development of a register's roadmap, looking toward the 2028 Census and beyond. It is critical you are able to bring a Te Ao Māori lens to yours and others' work and are open to progressing your individual learning journey on this path. You will also work across Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ and the data system to better deliver for te Tiriti o Waitangi partners.
In addition to the thought leadership role you will spend some of your time developing the statistical and analytical capability of our analysts within the Statistical Business Register and Statistical Location Register teams, working with your peers in other units, and contributing across teams and branches. You'll be involved in a wide-range of mahi, providing high level technical advice and oversight across key current-day activities.
Nōu te rourou | What you bring
In your role as Principal Analyst you will be using your expertise in the social statistics domain to provide technical leadership to the Nga Kapuinga - Statistical Registers work programme. You'll also have a chance to contribute more broadly to the development of Stats NZ's technical cohort. Therefore, your skill set will balance both your personal attributes and technical leadership experience and include:
- Passion and interest in social statistics concepts and the use of data to improve lives. Any experience with environmental or economic data would also be beneficial.
- Ability to see the big picture and turn visions into reality. You will have responsibility for designing new statistical products and infrastructure from the discovery phase right through to implementation.
- Knowledge and use of statistical registers in the production of data and statistics.
- Strong relationships across the data system - within Aotearoa, te ao Māori and internationally
- Coaching and mentoring - excited about developing new talent
- Critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to challenge and influence in a constructive way
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a way that can be easily understood by a non-technical audience
- Knowledge and experience, or willingness to learn about Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori.
