Ko tā mātou mahi - Our Role
The Urban Planning and Design group provides strategic leadership on urban planning, provides best practice urban design and planning advice, leads the management of Kāinga Ora large scale strategic partnerships and works closely with place based groups, iwi, local and central government agencies and the private sector to facilitate urban development opportunities.
The Strategic Urban Partnership team plays a key role in the implementation of cross-agency urban development initiatives, such as the Urban Growth Partnerships work programme and in the preparation of programme business cases for new urban development initiatives. It collaborates with the place-based teams, particularly where partnerships with external stakeholders (Crown, Councils, iwi and private developers) are necessary for Kāinga Ora to achieve its strategic objectives around urban development, housing affordability and community social and economic development.
The programme provides the opportunity for a step change in the housing and construction sector by increasing land and housing supply, investigating major Greenfield and urban regeneration projects and exploring innovative ways to address market constraints.
Reporting to the Director - Strategic Urban Partnerships, the Principal Advisor - Urban Development will be part of a dedicated team charged with initiating the delivery of communities and urban regeneration projects across New Zealand. The Principal Advisor will be responsible for providing strategic advice, input and delivery planning for a range of strategic and legislative initiatives which impact and/or are key deliverables for the Strategic Urban Partnerships team and wider Urban Planning and Design Group

To be successful in this role the Principal Advisor - Urban Development will have:
- Relevant experience in urban development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills based on sound reasoning, to ensure complex issues are communicated in a simple and logical manner to colleagues, opinion leaders and other Experience in prioritising demands, meeting deadlines and delivering desired results by taking ownership and using effective self and time management approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, collect, organise and analyse data to provide information and enable decision-making.
- A proven record in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals, groups and peers - able to collaborate, influence, manage competing interests, manage conflict and work effectively with senior leadership and multiple internal and external stakeholders including development industry professionals, local and central government agencies.
- Effective at negotiating and influencing.
- Financial analysis and numeracy skills relating to the monitoring and forecasting across multiple projects.
- Experience in delivering programmes or plans which are time critical.
- Sound judgement evident in operational decision making and able to make accurate and timely decisions when under pressure of tight deadlines and to consistently deliver on time.
