Overview:
We have an exciting opportunity for a sports reporter to join our Wellington newsroom. The role is to provide accurate, compelling and timely coverage of sports news stories and events across the company’s TV and digital assets, with a particular focus on Newshub Live bulletins.

**Responsibilities**:

- Primary responsibility is to find, develop and break original sports news stories that originate from the Wellington region and deliver them on Newshub’s social, digital and television platforms
- “Own” the big sports news stories in the Wellington region
- To provide fast, accurate and timely story information and content to a standard consistent with the Newshub brand
- To prepare reports in a variety of broadcast and online formats, as appropriate to the story and the audience using video, audio, graphics, stills and text as required
- Maintain a high standard of knowledge of a broad range of sports news events and issues, particularly those that relate to Wellington
- To actively contribute to the sports news calendar and diary - ensuring we are across as much as possible in the Wellington region
- Develop and foster extensive contacts among sports newsmakers with the aim of finding exclusive stories
- To be adept at using newsroom systems and tools to prepare stories and ensure all platforms are updated on story progress
- Undertake regular voice training
- To report live from the newsroom and from story (relevant) locations with credibility and warmth
- To handle breaking news calmly, ethically and professionally
- Identify potential live opportunities for both digital and TV stories
- Identify new opportunities for Newshub Sport to innovate
- To use social media effectively in a manner consistent with the Newshub brand
- Be involved in the 10am editorial meeting, bringing news tips and ideas to the discussion
- Be involved in the daily 1.30pm treatment meeting
- Work collaboratively with the Digital Sports lead and Audience and Engagement Editor to ensure all platforms are considered for story roll out plans
- Identify and source potential story ideas for ALL platforms and programmes
- Work closely with social media team, providing / creating content, devising coverage plans
- Contribute to the company’s online assets regularly
- Assist sports editor in planning coverage of major sports events
- Ensure all stories are editorially and legally sound, and BSA-compliant.
- Ensure Sports Editor, Director of Newsgathering and legal counsel are involved in decision making on legally fraught stories
- Maintain an excellent relationship with key personnel both within the Wellington newsroom and in the broader Discovery ANZ team
- Maintain and work to create high standards
- Work closely with the wider newsroom staff when sports content is prioritised into earlier segments of the TV bulletins or to the main Newshub home page
- Other duties as required

Qualifications:

- Good interpersonal skills
- A tertiary qualification, preferably in journalism
- Strong organisational skills
- Excellent editorial nous
- Ability to deal with stressful situations
- Highly organised, and able to multi-task
- Calm under pressure
- Ability to work unsupervised
- Competitiveness to drive constant improvement
- A strong broadcast-quality voice
- Knowledge of New Zealand sports news and current affairs
- Excellent knowledge of laws governing defamation, libel and other applicable legal issues
- Excellent knowledge of Broadcasting Standards Authority rules and guidelines
- An enthusiastic and positive team player who loves “news”
- A generous team member who appreciates individual and business successes
- Flexibility to work varied shifts and hours if required (including weekends)
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and perform effectively under pressure
