**Te whiwhinga mahi/The Opportunity**

The Chief Advisor reports to the General Manager of the Criminal Justice Unit, Policy Group.

The work of the Criminal Justice Unit provides oversight of the Criminal Justice system through stewardship of key legislation and leadership on critical domestic and international Criminal Justice issues. Our five teams are:

- Criminal Law
- Terrorism and Law Enforcement Stewardship,
- Harm Reduction and Public Safety
- Sentencing and Rehabilitation, and
- Victims

You will closely support the General Manager and work with the management team to achieve the Policy Group and Business Unit's outcomes and goals. The criminal justice policy work is often high profile and fast-moving.

A core part of your role is actively supporting and providing strategic advice to the General Manager, anticipating their needs and setting them and the Unit up for success. This includes helping to drive strategic objectives across the Unit.

You will be a trusted sounding board for the General Manager but also for Criminal Justice's five Policy Managers, contributing to what is a strong and supportive management team.

You will provide thought leadership for the Criminal Justice Unit, as a respected advisor with a depth of experience and professional maturity. The ability to work with ambiguity and manage stakeholder relationships (across the Ministry and with other agencies) is critical to the success of the role. You will help ensure delivery in an extremely fast-paced and reactive environment, coaching and mentoring advisors along the way and providing quality assurance.

You will maintain oversight of the Criminal Justice work programme, including priorities and emerging risks. You will support teams in the scoping, planning and delivery of complex, fast-moving projects. You will help build capability and culture across the Unit, and support the rhythms of day-to-day Criminal Justice life. You will champion the fundamental criminal justice principles that we uphold in our policy work.

At the Policy Group level, you will be part of a small and prestigious Chief Advisor cohort who, together, contribute to the broader Policy Group as well as their own Units - helping to ensure the excellent policy work that we are known for.

**He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience**

If you have proven yourself as an experienced policy leader and coach, we want to hear from you.
- You will be an influential leader who is able to work with others to problem solve
- You will use your connections inside and outside of government to understand the issues and collaborate to deliver
- You will bring an understanding of Te Āo Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- You will be able to quickly grasp complex issues and provide timely and trusted advice to the General Manager and/or Deputy Secretary Policy
- You will enjoy assisting the development of advisors at all levels and contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of policy advice across the Group

Joining the Ministry of Justice means you will become part of an inclusive organisation that values you and the communities we serve. It's our promise to ensure our workplace is one where our people feel healthy and safe, supported and able to be themselves at work. We value respect as the foundation for building a positive workplace culture and one where diversity is welcomed.
