**About the role**
National Road Policing Centre (NRPC) is an essential part of the road safety sector and is focused on reducing deaths and serious injuries through the delivery of road safety prevention, education, and enforcement activities. NRPC provides important services to the Commissioner, Police Executive and Districts in respect of the prevention of serious injury and death on our roads.
In partnership with our sector colleagues, NRPC has a lead role in the development and operationalisation of government strategies in relation to road safety, e.g., Road to Zero and the Road Safety Partnership Programme, alongside Our Business.
As part of the NRPC Strategy and Relationships team the Māori Cultural Advisor is responsible for building effective relationships to provide advice and support on all matters relating to Māori, the Māori/Crown Relationship, and the Treaty of Waitangi. You will work in partnership with key stakeholders providing leadership and advice on matters pertaining to tikanga Māori.
Key Accountabilities:
- Contribute to the development of Māori strategies and initiatives by maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the needs of Māori for responsive road policing and by contributing cultural expertise into design and implementation processes in respect of Māori/Crown relationship and working in partnership with iwi Māori and hapori Māori from a responsive policing perspective.
- Work with the NRPC Strategic Advisor Maori, internal stakeholders and community leaders to identify and understand current and emerging issues, trends and other environmental factors affecting Māori that have implications for how Police respond and what this means for the future development of policing strategies, policies, and initiatives.
- Provide cultural expertise and input into the design and development of capability development and training initiatives from a Māori perspective, as required.
- Monitor the effectiveness of strategies, programmes and initiatives providing feedback on any changes and recommendations.
- Support the implementation of road policing strategies, programmes and initiatives related to Māori by working with, supporting, and advising Districts.
- Provide timely advice and support to managers and staff across Police in respect of the
- Coach and mentor staff as required in understanding and dealing with all matters related to the Treaty of Waitangi and the Māori/Crown Relationship that support the kaupapa within Road Policing.
- Provide leadership and advice on matters pertaining to tikanga Māori including working with local Kaumatua where required and taking a leadership role around Pöwhiri/Whakatau at organisational events that connect in with our Māori communities and local marae that pertain to our road policing strategies, initiatives.
- Facilitate, as required, the delivery of bicultural education and capability initiatives across Districts to build Māori cultural competency including leading and delivering training both internally within road police and externally where required in a road policing context.
- Facilitate and coordinate consultation, engagement, meetings, communications, and events on behalf of Police, in consultation with iwi leaders, mana whenua, and relevant Māori organizations and leaders.
- Champions an approach to service delivery that recognizes the needs to be responsive to the unique needs of Māori and working in partnership to achieve good outcomes for community and road safety.
