Hamilton, New Zealand Waikato Regional Council Full time

**About us**:
We want more good people to come and do great things with us.

We love where we live. That’s why we work so hard to look after our region and the people who live and work in the Waikato region.

Customers sit at the heart of everything we do, and all staff have an important role to play in the delivery of exceptional customer service.

Our work is as diverse as the region we care for; from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula to the slopes of Ruapehu. We’ve got ambitious goals and there are some tricky issues, but that’s what makes it so interesting.

Looking for flexible ways of working options, at Waikato Regional Council we are committed to working more creatively to ‘get work done’ in a way that is of mutual benefit to you, the organisation and our communities.

**About you**:

- You will:

- share our vision for a sustainable future for the Waikato region, where the environment, economy and communities all thrive
- want to be at the heart of regional thinking on resource management reform
- help us to think creatively about how we respond to challenges in a sustainable way
- play a leading role in regional resource and growth management and infrastructure policy and planning
- The successful applicant will:

- have strong analytical skills
- be able to demonstrate a track record of successfully leading collaborative programmes or projects across agencies
- have the ability to communicate complex ideas convincingly to diverse audiences
- have a ‘can-do’ attitude with a drive to see real results
- be able to deliver in a political environment that can be high pressure and rapidly changing
- be a constructive team member who actively contributes to the positive culture of the team and section.

**Qualifications**:

- A relevant tertiary qualification in policy, planning, law, resource management, or similar, and experience in a relevant field.

**Experience**:

- At least seven years’ experience in a relevant field such as strategic, infrastructure or land use planning or policy.
- Working knowledge of local or central government and the relevant legislative environment.
- Be an articulate and compelling communicator with strong writing and presentation skills.
- Excellent policy development, policy process, and policy analysis skills.
- Political and tactical thinking skills
- Proven success at building relationships, working collaboratively and resolving issues with internal and external stakeholders.
- Management skills including people leadership, coaching, business acumen and positive business achievements and financial management.

**About the role**:

- Responsible for five direct reports, the team leader will work closely with the manager, their team and section, and peers across the Council, with the region’s city and district councils and other key stakeholders on delivery of integrated planning throughout the region with a focus on the natural environment.
- The role will work alongside the manager and Team Leader Strategic & Spatial Planning to:

- Provide oversight for the implementation of the Regional Policy Statement and other regional and national policy.
- Support the development of regional policy.
- Support local authorities and other stakeholders to implement regional policy through advocacy, advice, collaboration and engagement in statutory and non-statutory processes.
- Lead integration across directorates to ensure organisational awareness and delivery of regional and national policy.
- Lead and co-ordinate organisation submissions, mediations and appeal processes to statutory and non-statutory national and regional processes.
- Participate in developing and delivering the Section’s work programme.
- The satisfaction of having a hand in shaping the future of the Waikato Region.
- A supportive working environment with flexible working arrangements.
- Strong support for continuing professional development.
- Opportunities to work with industry-leading experts in their fields.
- An organisation which incorporates principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in its work environment and practices.

Annual salary begins from $105,060-123,600, based upon level of experience
