Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
Verification Services (VS) sits within NZ Food Safety, whose core purpose is to deliver independent, cost effective and high-quality verification, certification, inspection, and clearance programmes that ensure all relevant regulatory requirements are met. Our people deliver verification to a broad range of animal product industries and sectors and facilitate not only food safety, but biosecurity and market access for animals and animal product exports.
Reporting to the National Manager Technical & Calibration, the purpose of this role is to ensure consistent delivery of national certification services by promoting excellence in all aspects of the role both internally with staff and externally with customers and stakeholders.
This position would suit a self-aware learner who enjoys leading others and is comfortable dealing with ambiguity in a constantly evolving business.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to;
- Support the National Manager Technical and Calibration by leading and managing the delivery of national certification services to ensure the integrity and reputation of New Zealand certification assurances is of the highest calibre.
- Lead and manage a team of technical specialists, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to drive high performance and professional development.
- Engage in financial planning and forecasting
- Respond to industry and regulatory changes that result in new certification workstreams
- Ensure the capability of the certification team is developed and maintained by ensuring individual performance is managed, development needs are identified, and appropriate development opportunities are provided.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
This position has 4 direct reports who are based around New Zealand, and in turn manage their own team of Advisers and Coordinators. You will work closely with a team of over 25 people within Certification as well as our Specialist Advisers, and other departments within MPI to support the delivery of the national and regional certification programmes. Although this role will primarily deal with stakeholders within MPI, there is also opportunity to engage with industry and deepen your domain knowledge.
This team prides itself in providing a collaborative and respectful environment where they work together across a variety of interesting work programmes.
As the team are based nationally, some travel may be required for this position.

Mōu - About You
This role would suit someone with prior experience leading a team and a Science or Food technology tertiary qualification. Previous experience with certification would be considered a strong plus
To be successful for this role, you will be able to demonstrate:

- Experience as a leader and natural collaborator, with the ability to manage complex relationships
- Experience in managing relationships with an assortment of external stakeholders and customers
- Experience providing high quality business reporting, including financial forecasting
- Knowledge of the export sectors and/or certification programme or similar background
- Relevant tertiary qualification, Science or food technology tertiary qualification is desired
