**Position summary**:

Our highly respected client is a small, tight knit and friendly team based out of their North Shore office in Auckland, New Zealand. We have an exciting opportunity for a Consulting Editor to join their team of Consulting Editors, reporting to their Consulting Editors Manager. As a Consulting Editor you are the first touchpoint of a newly submitted manuscript (or abstract).
**The main role of a Consulting Editor is therefore to conduct initial checks to**:
- Determine if the manuscript complies with their Editorial Policies and the Aims and Scope of the specific journal they have submitted under.
- If there is a more suitable journal based on the study criteria and topic, to offer this to the author
- Assess clinical trial papers for adherence to clinical trial guidelines and registration
- Check whether the study has received the appropriate approval for human and/or animal ethics
- Assess the paper for English language, related to the understanding of scientific ideas, so that the best version of the manuscript is sent through to peer review
- Check the quality of the paper by investigating papers for salami-slicing or redundancy
- Liaise with authors to provide all the necessary requirements related to the checks, stated above, before moving a paper forward
In addition to the day-to-day duties, their Consulting Editors are available to other teams to answer any science-related queries and provide the appropriate advice. A Consulting Editor is also required to be involved in and manage projects, as discussed with the line manager, to continuously improve processes and systems for the consulting editor team and Dove as a whole. This will involve liaising with other departments within Dove, as well as external stakeholders when applicable. From time to time a consulting editor may be required to assist with additional duties as determined by the needs of the business.
R**equired** **skills/experience**:
- A good understanding of research design and scientific concepts
- A good understanding of best practice in medical research, publication ethics, and research integrity
- Proficient in English and professional communication skills, especially when interacting with customers
**Desirable** **skills/experience**:
- Master’s degree or higher, plus independent research experience
- Science degrees that would be suitable: Biochemistry, Chemistry and Psychology as well as Medical Science across different specialities
- Previous experience in academic publishing
- Publication history of your own own
