Overview:
At Newshub we understand the importance of reaching all New Zealanders to deliver news that matters. With this in mind, we have an exciting new position that will be responsible to help Newshub navigate important cultural relationships and ensure that the newsroom is reflecting the rich diversity of Aotearoa across our digital and TV platforms.
You will work with Newshub's leadership team, including the Senior Director of News on the establishment and ongoing development of our cultural strategy, including ensuring we act in accordance with tikanga and in the spirit of Te Tiriti.
This includes giving guidance to our editorial leaders and decision makers to explore diverse perspectives, fresh angles, stories and talent, ensuring these considerations are put at the forefront of the way Newshub operates as a newsroom.
**Responsibilities**:
- Scope and understand the current state of the newsroom on diverse community reporting, relationships and comprehension
- Work with the Senior Director of News to build a 2 year strategy to progress this knowledge and understanding
- Work alongside the editorial decision makers, including Director of News Gathering, the Director of TV Bulletins and the Director, Digital News to ensure impact across Newshub's output
- Supporting and mentoring Māori and culturally or ethnically diverse staff to ensure the workplace is culturally safe
- Educate the newsroom in wider knowledge of New Zealand's Māori and diverse communities, including tikanga, te reo and te ao Māori.
- Creating connections and developing meaningful relationships between Newshub and mana whenua and other diverse communities
- Supporting journalists and presenters with correct pronunciation and use of te reo Māori, both on-screen and in their interactions with Māori in person and online
- Implement Te Tiriti, language and tikanga modules across the newsroom with supportive training plans
- Implement and oversee unconscious bias training for all newsroom staff
Ensure events and dates significant to diverse audiences are considered and covered in daily and planning meetings
- Work with senior newsroom leaders to develop a diversity plan for all levels of the newsroom
- The Employee shall ensure they are familiar with the Employer's health and safety policies and procedures, and any modifications to those policies and procedures that may be introduced from time to time.
- Carry out your work safely and without endangering or causing harm to yourself, fellow staff members, contractors, customers, visitors, or the general public.
- Other duties as required.
- The Company may, after fair and reasonable consultation, change your duties, from time to time, for commercial reasons but not so as to substantially change the nature of the position.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of New Zealand news and current affairs
- A curious and interested mind, to ask questions and seek answers
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
- Excellent knowledge of tikanga, te reo and te ao Māori
- A relaxed and conversational training skillset to encourage and support staff to upskill
- A solid list of contacts and touch points within New Zealand's diverse communities, including Māori, Pasifika communities
- Excellent knowledge of cultural sensitivities and understanding on reporting of these issues
- Excellent knowledge of Broadcasting Standards Authority rules and guidelines
