The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Medical Officer is a generalist with a diverse role that includes aspects of primary care, occupational medicine, sports/musculoskeletal medicine, expeditionary medicine, prehospital medicine, and acute care. You should be willing to acquire and continually develop skills across this broad spectrum of experience.

Minimum Requirements
  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Must have completed postgraduate year 2. (PGY2)
Desirable Qualifications and Experiences

  • Vocational qualification and registration in a primary healthcare speciality (General Practice; Urgent Care, Rural Hospital Medicine and Occupational Medicine).
  • Clinical experience in pre-hospital emergency care.
  • Experience in sports and exercise medicine.
  • Experience in occupational health; and/or
  • Experience in small multidisciplinary teams, austere or expeditionary medicine, and/or previous military service.

The New Zealand Defence Force provides a Fellowship training programme to enable training towards various Fellowship qualifications in appropriate scopes. A selection and prioritisation process is used for acceptance on these pathways.

If successful, you will join your chosen military service, whether it be the Navy, Army or Air Force, and undergo basic Officer training. Royal New Zealand Navy training takes place in Devonport, Auckland; New Zealand Army training takes place in Waiouru; Royal New Zealand Air Force training takes place in Woodbourne (near Blenheim). Training can range from 8 to 26 weeks depending on the Service.

During training, you will gain institutional knowledge about the Defence Force and learn basic military skills like weapon handling, first aid, search and rescue.

It is worth noting there is no upper age limit for our recruits, so long as you pass the medical, physical and security requirements.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand. As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well-trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to a crisis at short notice.
