The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is a research-intensive department that provides a dynamic environment for researchers interested in developing state-of-the-art technologies and model systems, advancing treatments for cancer, cardiovascular, skin, muscle and neurological conditions, and addressing toxicological challenges.

The Department is also committed to high quality teaching in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical and health professional programmes.

Our research facilities include extensive PC2 spaces, with ready access to a mass spectrometry unit, confocal and electron microscopy units, a histology unit, flow cytometry unit, animal facility and a genomics and bioinformatics facility.

Te mahi/The role

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will join a collaboration between the Department and researchers at Plant and Food Research, the University of Waikato, and various international and New Zealand companies, focused on fish cell production systems for sustainable seafood and marine innovation.

The Otago-based project will investigate scalable protocols for directing cell metabolism towards biomass accumulation and collagen production.

Key tasks of the role include:

  1. Interacting with Programme leaders, staff, and students to develop and advance technologies and protocols to support Cellular Agriculture.
  2. Planning and executing experiments to meet the strict deadlines for programme deliverables.
  3. Analysing data and presenting at scientific meetings.
  4. Writing up results for contract reports, patents, and publications.
  5. Assisting with supervision and training of postgraduate students.

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  1. A PhD in cell biology, tissue engineering or a related field.
  2. Expertise in primary cell culture, mRNA and protein analyses.
  3. Experience in rheology, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, confocal and scanning electron microscopy or acquiring new skills quickly.
  4. Ability to work independently and co-operatively with other team members to meet research goals and deadlines.
  5. Excellent spoken and written scientific communication skills, with a record consistent with that of an active researcher.
  6. Proven ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.

This is a full-time (1FTE), fixed term (2 year) position, located in Dunedin. The expected start date is early June 2025.

The salary is $89,227 per annum, pro rata.
