We have an opportunity for a Senior Engineering Geologist or Senior Geotechnical Engineer to bring their technical expertise and support the Engineering team in delivering technical excellence, continuous improvement, and satisfaction to our customers and stakeholders.

Te whiwhinga mahi - The Opportunity
The Engineering team have five core functions of Engineering Design, Engineering Advice, Long-Term Asset Management, Technical Standards, and Assurance.

This role reports to the Engineering Team Leader for Civil discipline and will be responsible for the assessment of geotechnical hazards along the rail corridor.

This is a predominantly office-based design role, however you will be required to go to site for assessments of geotechnical incidents/assets, scoping major geotechnical projects and other stakeholder engagement requirements.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide geotechnical assessment, design and analysis for earthworks, slope stability and other risk mitigation solutions
  • Support the business in understanding and managing risks related to geotechnical hazards
  • Provide technical advice for geotechnical aspects of projects, including earthworks design, slope stabilisation, foundations of bridges, settlement and liquefaction
  • Support the development of asset management strategies for slopes, embankments, and risk mitigation structures (retaining walls, rockfall protection, etc.)
  • Be KiwiRail's geotechnical representative in the interface with major infrastructure projects

To be considered for this role you will have extensive geotechnical experience alongside a Degree in Engineering Geology or Civil Engineering.

A full NZ Drivers Licence is required for this role. A full NZ Drivers Licence is required.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Minimum of 10 years' professional experience, predominantly in rail and/or road infrastructure environment.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant design codes, standards, legislation and practices
  • Experience in earthworks and embankments design, drainage, slope stability assessment and geotechnical investigations and analysis
  • Experience in the design of retaining walls and risk mitigation structures
  • Experience with assessing risk associated with geohazards and providing onsite remedial solutions
  • Provide expert technical onsite supervision for geotechnical risk mitigation works
