This position contributes to the operations of the Public Law team within the Legal and Privacy division.

The team is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the Ministry across operational advice in relation to education legislation, contracting and procurement, human rights, official information and privacy, the development of policy and legislation, the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti of Waitangi, and dispute resolution and litigation.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role We are looking for an exceptional solicitor to join the Ministry's newly established Public Law team.

You will provide legal advice and support across their organisation with a focus on Māori interests and outcomes and the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi issues in education.


As the Senior Solicitor, Treaty of Waitangi Issues you will:

  • Support the development, implementation and monitoring of education policy and legislation, including the wānanga sector framework and the Māori medium and Kaupapa Māori work programme.
  • Manage their role in several Waitangi Tribunal inquiries, including the upcoming Education services and outcomes Kaupapa inquiry.
Mōhou ake | About you
This is a varied and challenging role. The ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve results is essential. A solid understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi/te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles is a must. We are looking for a committed team player that is also a self-starter and able to work independently. Experience in the Waitangi Tribunal or involvement in the process is desirable but not essential.

In addition, we are keen to hear from people with the following attributes:

  • Approximately 6+ years PQE or other relevant experience.
  • Tertiary qualification in law and the ability to hold a practicing certificate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Broad general legal knowledge, broad understanding of specialist areas affecting our organisation and the ability to make strategic decisions relating to them where necessary.
  • Solid knowledge and experience of the machinery of government and the public sector.
  • Strong research, investigative, analytical, logical, and problemsolving skills.
  • A high level of integrity, selfmotivation, flexibility, and responsiveness.
