This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and maintenance of cutting-edge technologies in the Defence sector.

As the Engineer Support and Workshop Manager, you will play a pivotal role in providing technical support, managing workshop operations, and ensuring the smooth functioning of our engineering projects.

The purpose of this new role is to provide engineering support to the Defence Technology Agency (DTA) Science and Research programs, including the supervising of the DTA Workshop space, providing engineering, mechanical and electrical support.


Some other responsibilities of this role include:

  • Engaging with program scientists and engineers to identify any design needs, provide design advice to staff, and design mechanical components in CAD;
  • Fabricating simple parts using DTA workshop equipment including standard equipment, 3D printer and laser cutter;
  • Assisting with equipment preparation, pre and post trials, including settingup and testing trials equipment, in various DTA land, sea and air trials (as required);
  • Providing technical support to engineers and technicians working on Defence technology projects;
  • Overseeing workshop operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and efficient utilisation of resources;
  • Collaborating with crossfunctional teams, including engineers, researchers, and project managers, to ensure seamless project execution;
  • Conducting regular inspections and maintenance of workshop equipment to ensure functionality and safety; and
  • Staying up to date with the latest technological advancements and industry best practices, implementing relevant improvements in workshop processes.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience
Ideally, you will have 'hands-on' mechanical engineering workshop experience.

This will include experience with:

  • General engineering hand tools;
  • Operating basic (nonCNC) engineering equipment (lathe, mill, wirefed MIG, drill presses, band saw, handheld power tools etc.);
  • Performing general engineering tasks, machining, drilling, tapping to required tolerances etc.
  • Basic sheet metal work; and
  • Understanding the requirements of simple welding tasks of aluminium, black steel and stainless steel, e.g., manufacture; brackets, equipment boxes, flanges, etc. There is no requirement to undertake certifiable welding, as this will be contracted out as required.
It would be advantageous if you have experience in using 3D printing and laser cutting.

If you can communicate very well (verbal and visually with drawings and computer models), are proficient in the use of Word and Excel, have good financial understanding for some budget work, and understand the important of project management we would love to hear from you.

The DTA is also the primary NZDF agency with responsibility for developing, managing and enhancing all aspects of scientific and technical liaison, coordination and cooperation with external-to-Defence agencies (national and international) and similar agencies within the Defence Forces of other nations.

This will include developing, enhancing and maintaining international links with similar specific Defence technology establishments of other nations.
