Te Papa stands proud as an iconic national building housing the treasures of the nation and is a vibrant destination for both national and international visitors. Biculturalism is a founding philosophy and practice of Te Papa designed to explore the contribution of Māori language and culture to the life, culture and activities of the museum in small and large ways. Te Papa fosters and nurtures cross-cultural capability, the ability of people of different cultural backgrounds to interact with one another in positive and uplifting ways.

The Mātauranga Maori team is seeking interest for the position of Curator Mātauranga Māori for a fixed-term period of 10 months full time. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced museum practitioner to provide curatorial leadership for taonga Māori research, exhibitions, publications, collection development and programmes. To be considered for this opportunity you will have a degree or qualification relevant to mātauranga Māori and museum practice, sound knowledge and experience of Māori research methodologies as well as an understanding of mātauranga Māori and its application and contribution to museum practice. You will have the ability to lead and participate in concept development, interpretation and representation of this in the context of Te Papa's visitor experience, specifically with exhibitions.

We are seeking candidates that can demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of curatorial practices and museum ethics and principles
  • Agility and ability to work effectively with iwi, hapū and whānau, academic and cultural organisations
  • Ability to develop creative, innovative approaches to exhibitions, demonstrating scholarship and facilitating mātauranga Māori within the exhibition framework

The salary for this position will be between $ $79,299 to $ $94,167pa.

Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.
