All about the job
The Road Safety Team plays an important role in improving the safety performance of Porirua city's transport system.

The team plays a leading role in the development of strategically aligned solutions and interventions that produce significant step changes in the achievement of positive road safety outcomes.


In this role you'll take ownership of Council's Road Safety Strategy, championing the education and promotion program and encouraging your team aligned with this strategy.

You'll be responsible for

  • Coaching, mentoring, motivating and managing a small team
  • Balancing workloads amongst the team ensuring timelines are met & expectations managed
  • Managing internal and external relationships to implement road safety solutions
  • Presenting to council & attendance at workshops, community meetings.
  • Embedding Safe System thinking within Council
  • Delivering traffic and road safety projects to support the work programmes of the wider Transport team
  • Providing roading technical expertise to investigate problems and identify solutions that are acceptable and cost effective
  • Ensure investment and decision making are optimised to help realise the vision of a safe road system

You will be driven to be an engaging leader with some leadership experience or see this as an opportunity to take the next step in your career.


Ideally, you're a qualified engineer with several years' relevant industry experience in a similar engineer role or related field, and you have expertise in traffic and road safety.

You'll need to show us that you can

  • Demonstrate experience in leading and coaching managing staff
  • Develop and grow an engaged team who are proactive high performers
  • Present on Traffic and Road Safety projects to council
  • Represent the team at workshops and community meetings providing expert advice and consulting on change
  • Lead and traffic and road safety knowledge and expertise and liaise with customers
  • Actively participate in, and manage, the traffic bylaw processes
  • Provide expert traffic and road safety advice on behalf of council at hearings and in court
