In this diverse role you will:

  • Provide advice to the Operations Manager on how the district work programme should reflect Treaty Partnership, national and regional plans, and most effectively address community and statutory land management work priorities
  • Do delegated thinking for the Operations Manager to ensure long term success in a changing environment
  • Take a leadership role in maintaining and building on relationships with the Rakiura community, business, community groups, volunteers, iwi / hapū / whānau, and forging new relationships to catapult forward the community's connection with nature and grow conservation outcomes
  • Manage public messaging in line with national strategies and local priorities for the Visitor Centre including, visual displays, online, electronic, and printed collateral and support Visitor Centre outreach opportunities
  • Manage and respond to all concessions, Resource Management Act (RMA), Statutory Land Management (SLM) processes
  • Create new content for and edit various reports including Stewart Island News articles, Southland Conservation Board and Kaitiaki Roopu updates from Rakiura
  • Lead on responses to media enquiries, Official Information Act requests and compilation of Ministerial responses
  • Manageme Community and Visitor Centre budgets including any variance reporting, journal, or accrual requirements
  • Work with and mentor fixed term Community Ranger (Monitoring) and oversight of the Rakiura Concession Monitoring Programme
  • Work with your regional colleagues to ensure integrated delivery of highest priority outcomes for the region
  • Attend conservation community group meetings as a DOC representative
  • Follow treaty principles to align the work of the team with mana whenua aspirations

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability working with key stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes
  • Strong organisational and event coordination skills and experience
  • A high level of computer literacy

Desirable:

  • Experience in statutory processes, including concessions and RMA advocacy
  • Skills in coaching, training, and supporting staff and the acquisition of technical knowledge
  • Experience working with mana whenua

As part of the Rakiura Operations team, you will join a tight knit crew, who genuinely enjoy working with each other, are passionate about the work they do and believe they have an incredibly special backyard.

Stewart Island / Rakiura is the southernmost and smallest island of the three main islands of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

It's a 20-minute flight from Invercargill or a one-hour ferry ride from Bluff.

Stewart Island is wild, beautiful, and offers a glimpse into a simpler, slower lifestyle, in rhythm with the sea and tides, attuned to the natural world of bush and beach.

Roughly 85% of the island forms the wild and enchanting Rakiura National Park.

The Rakiura community is a glimpse of old-fashioned Aotearoa, with strong values and the opportunity to be easily welcomed and integrated.
