Water Treatment Plant Operator

About the role


Reporting to the Senior Water Supply Operator your role will be based at the Waingake and Waipaoa water treatment plants in Gisborne, working in the greater team of eight people.


This position supports the operation of the Gisborne District Councils water treatment plants and the associated infrastructure in the city and townships.


You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.


Duties Include:

  • Assisting in the daily monitoring, maintenance and operation of treatment plants, booster pump stations, river intakes, bores, dams and water catchments and city reservoirs
  • Monitoring plant performance and responding to transgression
  • Ensuring all projects specified requirements and all technical, regulatory and safety standards are complied with
  • Operating within a quality management system and participating in the implementation of stated procedures and data management systems
  • Maintaining effective communication with the wider water team
  • Fostering and maintaining positive relationships with staff, contractors, stakeholders and the public / property owners

Skills & experience

  • Hold a National Certificate in Water Treatment (Level 4) and have a minimum of 1 year water treatment plant operation experience
  • Competency in Microsoft Office, SCADA and software systems
  • Competencies and confidence in oral and written communication
  • Sound interpretive, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Automation, mechanical and process control experience is advantageous


Water Treatment Plant Operators will work within an agreed roster system as required and must be available for after-hours call outs and emergency events.
