The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa.

He angitūtanga | About the role**You will work closely with the Science Advisor, the Bycatch and Threats Manager, and the international team in growing international awareness, engagement, and action among fishing nations to reduce seabird bycatch in international waters, through a range of collaborative, partnership, and technical initiatives.

The position will be focussed on:

  • providing analysis on the implementation of bycatch mitigation measures outside New Zealand waters, in priority ocean areas/ fisheries for focal seabird species
- ensuring collation, archiving and publication of Antipodean albatross tracking data to assist the species recovery effort
- supporting spatial analysis of data and fishing efforts to support recovery efforts.
- implementation of a pilot study utilising cloud-based data archiving, databases and to test defined decision support tools
- developing options to improve data archiving, publication, and the utility of defined spatial decision-support tools
- building and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders and coordinate cross-agency initiatives.

We are looking for a dedicated and collaborative individual to join our Biodiversity System and Aquatic team.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience in marine conservation or similar field
- at least two years' experience in data management and working with large and complex datasets.

  • Ability to analyse data, including spatial data, and ability to right clear and concise reports.
  • Confidence working with software tools to manage datasets and maintain data integrity, such as ArcGIS and R.
  • Proven skills at building and maintaining relationships, both internal and external
  • Be a clear communicator who can engage with both internal and external staff across the motu.
  • A passion for conservation and willingness to advocate for conservation.
Desirable

  • Experience in demographic modelling.
  • Experience in visualisations to turn data into stories.
  • Experience with animal tracking software.
  • Interest in wildlife conservation.

Mō te tīma | About the team**You'll join a passionate science and technical team focused on addressing bycatch and other threats to protected species and will work closely alongside key partners including our internal policy and international teams, whānau, hapū and iwi, government agencies and other international and domestic stakeholders working together to support the delivery of the Government's national and international conservation obligations.

The salary range for this position is $66,535 to $83,906 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
