As a Hauora Māori Health Protection Officer at Te Whatu Ora Tairawhiti, you will be responsible for implementing a Hauora Māori approach across various health protection program areas, including communicable diseases, urban planning, and environmental health issues.

Additionally, you will play a key role in supporting the team in building their Māori Health knowledge and skills.

As a naturally inquisitive person, you should possess an investigative mind and be adept at problem-solving. The ability to assess, communicate, and manage risks to human health is an essential aspect of this role. Strong communication skills and the ability to cultivate positive working relationships within the wider public health team are crucial. Attention to detail and proficiency in following procedures are also essential.

You should have expertise in managing relationships both internally and in the broader community, including with Mana Whenua, stakeholders, and NGOs.

You will be a natural leader and teacher who can help support the team and communities in a way that empowers tino rangatiratanga.

A good knowledge of and strong links to the wider Tairawhiti communities will be an advantage.

In order to be successful in this role, you will also need to demonstrate the following:

  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • A clean, full class one, NZ Driver's License
  • A background in Public Health, Māori Health, Environmental health or other relevant qualification
  • Ability to react to changing work demands in a changing work environment
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to providing equitable outcomes to people of all ethnicities and backgrounds.
Our Health Protection Officers may be required to assist with emergency responses and being on an on-call roster. As such, the flexibility to also scale up hours, work out of hours and during weekends is preferable.

Tairawhiti Public Health is part of the National Public Health Service within Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, based in the Te Manawa Taki region.
